alternate uses for soundcloud

Post by nowaysj » Sat Jun 12, 2010 7:31 am

I'm total newb with soundcloud, just signed up, but I love it, it has really become a stage in of my workflow. That's the first time I can say that about an online app. Prolly an achievement in of itself right there.

I get the impression I don't use sc the way other people do, though.

I primarily use it as a place for storing and reviewing renders. When I'm quote unquote "done" ( ) with a track I'll put it up there. Once it's online, it's like I can hear the track again for the first time. I don't know what it is. It could be that soundcloud sounds so bad, that I don't get lost in the sound, something I tend to do in my studio. It could just be that it is external.

Anyway I find myself with a bit more perspective there. I take notes right into sc's interface, and those notes will be there when I return. I have fl, and it has a notebook vst where I occasionally take notes, and I jot down notes in my studio as well, but something about the process just works better in sc. I might not return to a track for 7, 14, 90 days, and the notes will be there.

Also, I find it easy to share tracks with people. I value the feedback I receive when I ask people questions about tracks. I like to make it as easy as possible for people to respond. If they don't have time, they can just listen in the sc player. If they have the time, a full dl of high quality sound is right there.

Anyway, does anyone use sc in this way, is this shit so obvious and I'm just late to the party?

Do you use sc in what you think is a nonstandard way?

I do this a fair bit, most of the tracks on my soundcloud I have 3 or 4 different versions of because i've put the "original" on there and played it to death before i realise it's missing something.

I also find it quite handy to use it for testing, for instance if a track sounds good on my system, I can just throw it on soundlcloud and try it on a mate's system when I go round to see how it changes and if something needs tweaking.

As an aside, Maximo Park used soundcloud to distribute remix stems for a "remixed" album to producers, you just had to message them and ask for whatever track you wanted and it'd be sent to your dropbox as a private set, then you just had to send the finished track back via their dropbox. Pretty nifty :)

If you don't want people hearing works in progress, create a different account just for yourself and don't tell the public about it. Pretty helpful just for storing tracks, or sending links to friends to give their opinion before you post them on the main one.

You can also set up private tracks (with the ability to use secret links to send friends).

this track has been privately shared to you and 96756 other people

nah i use private sharing to send stuff to labels
i probably could use it as more of a positive tool if i gave a damn about it

Seems like SC is supposed to be for marketing/distribution of music. I use it in the music making process.

When I make tracks there are a lot of psychological steps that take place in how I relate to what I'm making. For the first little while I've just opened an empty project and am experimenting, or trying to get sound or vibe I have in my head. Often I can't quite get the vibe in my head, or once it's out it doesn't sound as good as it did inside. But anyway eventually I come across something exciting which I like, and chase that path, chucking new stuff in, swapping sounds, still experimenting but more focused since I have an essential sound that I'm happy with. Then at some point, often after the first session making a track, the track solidifies pretty strongly as to what the track "is", and now the only edits that sound right to me must help this central vibe - they must only contribute to it, I have to be careful what I do because I might veer away from this great idea. This is where if I'm not careful I can get stuck, and quite a lot of great projects have ended here. Some I've gone back to one of these tracks after some time to relax and free myself regarding the feel of that track and I've been able to continue, but many tracks are left behind here. But when I have a track where the vibe is good I'm adding/chopping/editing to contribute to the good sound. Here, sometimes I export the track, and listen to it as a 320 or .wav. This gives me a completely different feeling when listening to the track. It is like the track is knew, even though it's playing exactly what it plays in the DAW. Sometimes I'm pretty much finished the track the first time I export, but every time it is like the track is new. It's like when I've made a good loop, and leave it playing while I go to the toilet. It sounds totally different in there, like some else made it sometimes. Uploading to the internet is the same, I sometimes upload, and then listen to it a couple of times on my DAW computer (where I could easily play the HQ wav) because it sounds different. Another time it sounds completely different is when someone has said they really like it, and I feel that they really did like it - they didn't just say "dope track" or whatever. Sounds different again.

I deleted my Myspace the other day. I was scared to do it, but once I did I had that elated feeling you get after you do a big poo.
