the synth sounds exactly like a triangle played at lowest octave on my Moog MG-1, gritty analog goodness.


I have been really into this sound for a minute, just started producing more of it.

Triangle? I just set up a saw over a sine in me virus and was quite pleased with the result. Felt it was pretty close.

I'd eat a sock if Slug's synth was vst though. Really does sound like analog sparkling ripping serated purity to me. Just send zzzz zzzzz zzzzz down my spine.

the slug has an analog synth but dont think he uses it that much
and i bet 1893 dollars that none of us in this thread can spot and analog synth over a vst's, its a bit like religion really

sure it will sound a tad different but software is the shit and can replicate anything an analog synth does,
and in a full blown heavily compressed track like the slugabed one you wont be able to spot the difference

If that sawy bass was made with a vst, I'd really like to know which one, and what was the processing on it, because it sounds fantastic. A sound I have always attributed to analog.

I mean, every option in analog synths has been made into digital vst stuff if i'm not mistaken,
so only the timbre/harmonics can sound true analog but thats something you wouldnt be able to spot in a full track i think

Good analog has a sound that I haven't heard reproduced in a vst. Envelopes aren't as quick, vst filters sound dead, etc etc. I don't think there is any legitimate dispute that analog has a unique sound.

not to speak for slug in any way whatsoever, but he will tell you "i use FL4 only."

and that sound in the video is basically a saw and square, + distortion, and slight envelope modulation on the pitch of the osc's...

the key is using your pitch wheel or assigning the mod wheel to pitch and playing those sweeps and swooshes in real time... or programming the midi pitch cc...

fun stuff can also be had by routing aftertouch to pitch parameters, and applying more pressure via the keys to raise or lower pitch... or again, minus a midi controller??? then program the channel pressure midi cc to achieve same result.

I think the options you are not figuring into the equation are quite simple. The harmonic content of a voltage controlled oscillator will undoubtedly sound different than a mathematical representation in the digital realm. Not to mention the sound of the filters etc etc etc.

You can design sounds in the same way and even much more complex ways through a vst, but you'll never get to enjoy the sound of raw electricity moving along an analog signal path with a vst.

Even things as small as a bit of hiss form the oscillators is something vsts can't account for, analog signal flow can be unwieldy and imperfect (most of the time) which is what a lot of people would say accounts for its sound.

yeah thats true but thats not what should make synthesis interesting, its what you do with it,
but all i see is people whining about how big producers with big sounds will most likely be using big expensive analog synths

wich in my opinion is a super sad discussion, because if a tune is sick (like ultra heat treated) the tune is sick, and if its made by analog synths or not is totally irrelevant
what you use is one of THE most irrelevant topics on music forums in my opinion really, and it never helped me to know any of that.
I read quite a lot about production before i started out and it just made me think totally wrong stuff about a whole lot of stuff.
And there's probably a whole lot of people on here worrying more about what they use then actually commiting time to making music
