Then later I started producing, and various radio stations/podcasts/etc wanted DJ mixes from me... so some of those started floating around, and now I got a show on Sub.FM. But even though I tell promoters I am willing to do DJ sets, they always ask/book me to do a live set.

So I am a DJ only in the radio/online realm... but I'd love to DJ live though (to mix it up versus the live set gigs)
what's your live set up like? Is it just ableton or what? I'd love to know

I always collected music as a kid. For $ it was all about delivering newspapers in the 6th grade and buying AC/DC vinyl. By the time the 8th grade came around i had the biggest collection of music asI was a bit of a pack rat. So when there was those high school dance parties I was called. I DJed a 24 hour dance-a-thon in the 9th grade thatr was a real success. ;) I also DJed halloween/ christmas/ new years and birthday parties in high-school.

I got into the whole edm thing through hiphop n extremist shit (gabba powernosie breakcore hard dnb ect.) Started reading the whole theory of beatmatching n the gears started lcicking in my head...

All came together when I was opening windows media player (the windows 98 version to!) and accidentally opened two instnaces of the same program... now Im sitting here looking at these two windows media players with eqs n play buttons n shit... just kinda... oh wow moment... started cueing up tracks I new the tempos of, dropping with play buttons and using the eqs n volume faders with my mouse, kindda just trying to learn it... caught on to media player having a 'track speed' so started to guess match, no cue at this point...

went insane that way, not being able to cue... so we (me n a homie) modded a few walkman cd player things made frankenstiens out of walkmans, interior lighting grade dimmer switches... Spliced a cable together so we could get a jack into each headphone port, and out too a stereo... youd unplug a jack and plug in earbuds to cue... lmfao...

Now fast forward few years Im running real cdjs and am fully competent on vinyl and timecodes :D ...

And its that whole thing makes me look down on cats I see comin up on sync buttons.

I actually started doing it a while ago. Right now I use your typical DJ software a pad midi
controller and a mouse :) So no jogwheels or something similair :(
Just trying to beatmatch without looking at the bpm and the waveform (and without sync button ofcourse).
Too bad I'm hearing about dj's using sync more and more... Makes me think about whether or not I should
learn to beatmatch by ear.

:z: I remember when cdj's were first coming out and some had the bpm displayed and thinking the same thing. I used to work with this 17 year old and he was telling me how this dj he knew could mix two beats to sound like one...Facepalm moment.
Kids these days.

Ableton + 2 midi controllers. Oxy8 for fx triggering, channel volume control, i use the pitch & mod wheels in conjunction for X/Y control in some fx (so i don't have to use the trackpad). X-Session for crossfader and fx sends. Plus laptop keyboard for triggering samples and clips.

I keep messing around though, finding new ways to get even more functionality. My best "experiment" resulted in the pitch & mod wheel 'scratching' technique I developed. (to be clear - it really doesn't sound like scratching at all, but the technique came about from me trying to find a way to emulate the feel of it, even if not the sound of it).

Yeah you're right. It's much more rewarding to mix into a song without any DA.
Think I'll just make one of them t-shirts from one of mine tnuc Brigade ones.

I was producing instrumental hip-hop and doin beats for upcoming rappers. Went to my first rave in la to sell pipes for the shop I was apprenticing at and fell in love with the music. I knew dj'ing was something i wanted to do so I saved up a shit load and bought my first pair of cdj's and a djm 400, best purchase of my life
