Re: Decent Books on Music and Musical Culture
So packed with interesting stuff, my mind nearly popped.
The bit about live musicians hating the invention of recording music, because it ment you didnt need to pay to see a live band to here music anymore, and therefore loads of musicans lost there jobs. Had many points that could be drawn with the illegal download industry problems at the moment.

This is an incredible read, totally complex, demented and futuristic.

Read this and it's extremely useful for interpretating the topic for people who have no prior knowledge and still useful for those with a better grounding (it's been useful for my psychology degree as well as production I tell thee!)kingthing wrote:I really enjoyed this one, from a slightly anal and boring point of view:

Imagine being hated for being a DJ, because the "invention" of the DJ was clearly going to be the death of music

Theres a great quotes from Jimmy Saville around asking a venue if they could get him 2 records players too. They asked why he needed 2, and when he explained it was so there would be no gap in the music, the Venue owner replied. "Why, whats the rush?" #
Made me smile, and then wonder about how much the pace of life must have changed in the last 50 odd years

Unlocking the Groove: Rhythm, Meter, and Musical Design in Electronic Dance Music
This one is an ethnomusicological study, borne from the author's masters thesis, if I remember correctly. I was actually a part of this, which was awesome!

Re: Decent Books on Music and Musical Culture
+1 on "All Crews" and Michael Veal's "Dub." Also good is the Scratch Perry bio, "People Funny Boy."
But this is the best book about music I've ever read: it literally rewired my brain to think about sound differently. Srsly. I cannot endorse it enough.
