Just a reminder to ... (Backup)

Post by tripaddict » Tue Jun 29, 2010 12:27 am

BACKUP YOUR SHIT

If your data doesnt exist in more than 3 separate geographical locations your data doesn't really exist.

I've just backed up over 250gb of tunes, samples, patches, tf2 levels & design work

dont say i didnt warn you when your 500gb / 1tb drive goes down ;)

act now, dont cry later

you have been advised

Tru dat!

I nearly killed myself when one of my main drives decided to give up on life

Luckily it was before I started producing so I didn't have any samples to lose (my sample collection is probably what I'm afraid of losing most), but I lost soooo much music. I didn't want to live anymore at that point.

Now I use RAID array that mirrors everything onto two other drives. Still, if some shit happened NOW when I have even more music, as well as my sample collection and all that, I'd probably go insane

Can't agree enough. I can't get enough drives, since I also back-up old versions of everything I've got, just in case something's flown under the radar.

Seriously though, backing up 1 billion gb of samples+music and other shit is the most tedious thing in the world.

cheap drives like that are great for backing up stuff that kind of falls in a niche. "oh yeah, that's my drive dedicated to samples of asian hookers eating eggs"

Fucking loool.

80GB? Snap.

Nah, I've got a 1TB badman drive where I store everything on my laptop, a 350GB little passport drive that I put all my music and samples on, and a 500GB LaCie drive for all my oooooold shit, which I never ever look at. Then I've got about 3 other scrapped up old drives with no cases. If I hooked em up I'm sure I would find all my old school porn. Takes me back.

TBH, I've got a weird purification habit. I tend to just scrap ALL my old data and never look at it ever again, leave the harddrives in the dust. I only pull my very very crucial samples, and a small selection of albums + LP's which I couldn't do without, and just start all over again.

I've gone from a 150GB music library to 20GB in a couple days. Course I left the old one on my DJ laptop.

All this stuff needs to be decluttered every so often.

I've been looking for something like this for soooo long. Does it work? Looks a bit ghetto.

ICE Mirror? Works great, I've been using it for years now. It does look kind of old but that's what I like about it. No bullshit, straight to the point.

English isn't their first language as you can probably tell, but the software is really solid.

I backup 3 HD's to one Monster... I should really Also get the backup backup'd and stored in another location as someone pointed out. Time machine on the OSX platform has saved my skin on several situations. Thank god!

External hard drives are great and all - but the biggest way to protect yourself is OFFSITE backup. What if your house burned down? Flooded? What if your computer equipment all got stolen?

Mozy and Backblaze both offer unlimited storage automated backup to the cloud for $5 a month. If you are paranoid about other people storing your data - you can keep a private encryption key so they can't read it :D
