Study links bee decline to cell phones
By Sasha Herriman, CNN

London, England (CNN) -- A new study has suggested that cell phone radiation may be contributing to declines in bee populations in some areas of the world.

Bee populations dropped 17 percent in the UK last year, according to the British Bee Association, and nearly 30 percent in the United States says the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Parasitic mites called varroa, agricultural pesticides and the effects of climate change have all been implicated in what has been dubbed "colony collapse disorder" (CCD).

But researchers in India believe cell phones could also be to blame for some of the losses.

In a study at Panjab University in Chandigarh, northern India, researchers fitted cell phones to a hive and powered them up for two fifteen-minute periods each day.

After three months, they found the bees stopped producing honey, egg production by the queen bee halved, and the size of the hive dramatically reduced.

It's not just the honey that will be lost if populations plummet further. Bees are estimated to pollinate 90 commercial crops worldwide. Their economic value in the UK is estimated to be $290 million per year and around $12 billion in the U.S.

Andrew Goldsworthy, a biologist from the UK's Imperial College, London, has studied the biological effects of electromagnetic fields. He thinks it's possible bees could be affected by cell phone radiation.

The reason, Goldsworthy says, could hinge on a pigment in bees called cryptochrome.

"Animals, including insects, use cryptochrome for navigation," Goldsworthy told CNN.

"They use it to sense the direction of the earth's magnetic field and their ability to do this is compromised by radiation from [cell] phones and their base stations. So basically bees do not find their way back to the hive."

Goldsworthy has written to the UK communications regulator OFCOM suggesting a change of phone frequencies would stop the bees being confused.

"It's possible to modify the signal coming from the [cell] phones and the base station in such a way that it doesn't produce the frequencies that disturb the cryptochrome molecules," Goldsworthy said.

"So they could do this without the signal losing its ability to transmit information."

But the UK's Mobile Operators Association -- which represents the UK's five mobile network operators -- told CNN: "Research scientists have already considered possible factors involved in CCD and have identified the areas for research into the causes of CCD which do not include exposure to radio waves."

Norman Carreck, Scientific director of the International Bee research Association at the UK's University of Sussex says it's still not clear how much radio waves affect bees.

"We know they are sensitive to magnetic fields. What we don't know is what use they actually make of them. And no one has yet demonstrated that honey bees use the earth's magnetic field when navigating," Carreck said.

As with the Romans and their use of lead plumbing, (which caused the upper classes to develop more and more birth defects, which ultimately caused the Empire to fall) - wouldn't it be ironic if the same thing were happening here, where our cell phones caused Colony Collapse Disorder in the bees, which undermined the whole food chain from the bottom up...

They found this out a while ago man. There are other factors too. Bacteria, disease, climate change, pesticides, GM crops among others. CCD is a big problem. It's a shame not many people know about it or seem to care.

I've known about Colony Collapse Disorder for a while, but this was news to me.

Anyway - bathing in a perpetual artificial 60 Hz electromagnetic grid all the time can't be 100% harmless to humans either, I'm sure. We just haven't connected the dots.

Wasn't there a law passed that allowed women to drink wine, the caskets of which were sealed with lead, and this lead to the birth defects?

Probably both...

Seriously though, humans need to stop fucking with the world and doing stuff we either know is harmful or don't know what the effects are (and even then scientists have been horribly wrong so you should never be so sure)

I recall reading somewhere - and unfortunately can't recall where - that cancer cells reproduce something like 10x as fast when bathed in a 60Hz EM field. However, with no sources to back that up... caveat emptor.

Why? This is a well documented fact. It wasn't the only reason for the decline of the empire, but it was - according to what I read - a big problem.

In fact, the Romans invented a sauce made from rotting fish to cover the taste of the lead. Called garum or liquamen, the recipe called for fish that'd been left in the sun to rot for a certain number of days to achieve different flavors, apparently. It was the ketchup of its day.
nowaysj wrote:Wasn't there a law passed that allowed women to drink wine, the caskets of which were sealed with lead, and this lead to the birth defects?
I don't know about that, unfortunately - I do know though that the cult of Bacchus/Dionysos was very popular in the later Roman empire and the Senate tried to outlaw it, because their ceremonies were more or less drunken orgies with a little animal (and sometimes human) sacrifice thrown in. Interestingly enough, in the beginning these cults were almost all female with an occasional male priest or two. Over time it became more evenly co-ed, but the rites were still all about gettin' loaded and fuckin' (gee... wonder why it was so popular?)

Oh, and Vishnu - yeah, lead causes birth defects. This wasn't really known until the latter half of the 20th century though. Lots of old housing projects and industrial works used to be coated in lead-based paint and it led to big problems when little kids ate paint chips that'd fallen off (places like Detroit, Chicago, etc.) - the first coat of the Bay Bridge here in California was lead-based and the sea winds stripped all that paint right off and deposited it in the waters of the San Francisco Bay, where much of it still is to this day: this is why you don't want to eat seafood caught in or near the Bay.

:(
Wikipedia wrote:Lead is a poisonous substance to animals. It damages the nervous system and causes brain disorders. Excessive lead also causes blood disorders in mammals. Like the element mercury, another heavy metal, lead is a potent neurotoxin that accumulates both in soft tissues and the bones. Lead poisoning has been documented from ancient Rome, ancient Greece, and ancient China.
