Kiwi ingenuity could help BP in its battle to stem the unfolding ecological disaster caused by the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Faced with an international outcry over the well spill, which the US Government estimates is leaking 60,000 barrels of oils a day into the ocean, the company has asked the public for help.
BP is calling for ideas on how to stop the oil gushing out of the ground, and has asked for more information about the suggestions of two Kiwis.
However, just who the enterprising pair are and what their suggestions have been remain secret as BP considers whether their ideas could work.
New Zealand's BP spokesman, Neil Green, said the company was calling for ideas through its international website, which had attracted more than 20,000 suggestions.
About five New Zealanders a week were making suggestions, which were being forwarded to BP's response team. It had asked for more information about two ideas.
It was unclear whether the suggestions would be used, and Mr Green said he was unable to give any details in order to protect the submitters' intellectual property.
BP is issuing regular updates on its response to the spill. In its latest update, on Tuesday, the company said it had collected 8195 barrels of oil in 12 hours.
As of Monday, the company said it had recovered about 25,830 barrels of oil from the ocean.
BP initially said 1000 barrels of oil were leaking each day from the well, but the estimate has been raised by the US government to 60 times that amount.
Mr Green said two New Zealand BP staff had volunteered to travel to America and help with the spill response, but what they would do was not yet clear.
While international criticism of BP's response to the spill increases, New Zealand is preparing for an upsurge in offshore oil exploration.
The Government has for the first time opened up the Raukumara Basin off the East Coast for exploratory drilling, awarding a five-year permit covering 12,333 square kilometres to Brazilian company Petrobras.
In the month since the announcement, a Facebook page entitled Stop the Drilling on our East Coast has attracted nearly 1800 members.
On its page, the group says opening up more areas to drilling risks New Zealand's green reputation and jeopardises the coast.
It has organised protests to be held on East Cape beaches on Sunday and is calling on protesters to light fires on them from 12pm to 1pm to make a stand against increased oil exploration.
Re: oil spill - the solution?
One idea I saw that would work well is straw bails that roll out like a carpet but much thicker, soak and trap the oil up, be removed and can then be used to burn the fuel.
Re: oil spill - the solution?
burning the bails would be a real bad idea ay! think of the pollution! it would be much better to dig a deep as hole, like 100 metres underground & bury that shit! has anyone started to use less gas since this catastrophe?pdomino wrote:One idea I saw that would work well is straw bails that roll out like a carpet but much thicker, soak and trap the oil up, be removed and can then be used to burn the fuel.

Well yeah true, but anything to get that shit out the ocean right !?
Re: oil spill - the solution?
the hay plan is completely unworkable. http://senseofevents.blogspot.com/2010/ ... -plan.html
Re: oil spill - the solution?
I'm no scientist, but I see your point.
This made me laugh
"The last thing we needs is 40K tns of oil clinging to millions of tons of hay floating across the ocean toward Europe. "

Re: oil spill - the solution?
This isn't a normal oil reservoir that they have drilled into, we don't have the technology to contain the amount of pressure that the oil is coming out at.
Re: oil spill - the solution?

When you add it up, BP comes out looking like a total failure.

The US government and most its politicians are also to blame for lineing thier pockets with riches from BP. The politicians, public servants, regulatory agencies and police were bought off. These state and federal politicians let BP operate without safe inspection and approval. BP and US politicians like Dick Chainey and Geirge Bush, knowingly used the taxpayers to for up the cash pay the rent for Deepwater Horizon without the knowledge or consent of the law and people. They de-regulated the industry clearing they way for the apocalypse.
BP just did what a corperation does best. Seek profits @ the expence of the small people. Skipping the safty for profits cause the deaths of good people. Its a shame because BP was supposed to be this iconic company for the people. Shows how paying off Police, politicians and brianwashing the people with propaganda gets the few elite rich and powerful loads of $$$ and the small people are still under thier heal.
http://www.wdsu.com/politics/24184173/detail.html <--- Look @ the kinda politicians we got over here... calling the 20 billion set aside by BP a slush fund. Whne its said and done there might be more than 100 billion in damages. These GOP Republican and Democratic politicians are so bought off its not even funny. BP pays for many politicians, public servants and "law" enforcement.
Adding insult to death, injury and destruction, BP isnt sending people the $ they promised to. 100s of fisherman are still waiting for $ ...

I can't wait for the Hollywood version.
...and of course:
Deepwater Horizon 2.
This time, it's personal.

Just because you are a character, does not mean you have character.
Re: oil spill - the solution?

I vote Steven Seagal star in the movie. http://www.stevenseagal.com/ He'd not only wipe out the bad guys but he'd make the secretary his sex slave while defeating the feds too.
