the reality is that this place has functioned and grown for 5 years now with the same basic core principles, and i don't see that changing anytime soon.

juxtaposing these might help a few understand things...

beefs aside, truth is i've never caught those golden ages you talk about, when i got in things were run by a dozen of uber-aggressive kids insulting everyone and teaming up to lynch anyone they didn't like. luckily that's nothing to bother me, rather entertain me, to their despair that grew into pure online violence until they got tired and gave up. so i was safe, but by myself, not because anyone from the forum helped.
meanwhile more ppl came in and now there's more mobs forming occasionally, but weaker and easier to shut off

m8, my experience is this: moderation is almost nonexistent on snh, as opposed to other sections, and for me that's the interesting part - to see the people freely expressing themselves.
so things are balancing themselves naturally, and when out of the blue badger decides to pass by and take action once in a while, instead of helping he causes even more stir most of the cases, usually because he's biased by his obvious strong feelings towards members/topics, his grounds for action are as solid as his intelligence and his morals are non-existent. there's been a few other good interventions as well imo, not sure by whom, maybe him too, but those "signed" by badger usually had this effect. take it or leave it, there is no link to approve/disprove what i said better than the one you're on

if you want to defend badger by saying "this is about as good as it can get" and leave the whole responsibility on the crowd, or just a small group of people, this is exactly what you shouldn't do, because mods' job is to manage the crowds, innit? so you can't say: "he worked on the situation here very hard but he has no responsibility for it". it's not possible in this universe. either he is not involved or he is responsible, get meh?
