I invented Dubstep

Post by ResetTheAtari » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:33 pm

How's that for a cuntish General Levy like statement?

Here's a tune I did back in 1998...

Soundcloud

It was featured on UK-Dance.org's 2nd Compilation at the time. Totally forgot all about it until I was looking through old CDs this morning. I had to rescue it from my CD copy which was degrading badly, hence the light crackle. UK-D was a small but influential community back in the day - was the first music website in the UK, and the first dance music site in the world believe it or not. Had folk like Kode9, Grievous Angel, Darren Underworld, Dub Kult, Hostage, Suddi 'Together' Raval, etc on it.

I was a bit sick of the all the techstep dnb at the time and wanted to experiement with a slower different kind of sound, without going Garage so came up with that. Also did a remix of Toya's 'I Do' in a similar vein and another much more dub/reggae thing with Hostage. We were calling it 'Cyber RnB' back then though, not dubstep  Despite getting some great comments on the web at the time for the Hostage collab, we abandoned the sound thinking it wouldn't take off.

Kind of wish I had stuck with it now

Interesting piece. Yeah, I can hear the rhythm we now largely associate with dubstep etc. I mean its not like people haven't been exploring these rhythms I guess. For instance I mean I was doing half time tunes back in the late 90s more experimenting with latin and funk tho too but I guess you could say all this stuff is the roots of what's to come.

like it...u should give it a relick ;)

i was also doing slower music back in my 1 synth a sampler and a 4 track days (remember them??)...was calling it ambient tekhop lol and it was basically hiphop beats with jungle basslines and techno synths...at 70 bpm i wouldnt say it was exactly like dubstep but there were enough similarities for me to remember it now

gonna have to find out if my m8s still got the tape lol

Seems to be around 125, too long ago to remember what BPM the track was at, but I tapped it into Ableton.

Could probably grab the accapella again and do a refix :)

NICE 1 on that Front 242 tune... there was an old Coil song that was very, very proto too.

Well, singular experimentation is the source of musical trends ! Drum & Bass was invented in the 70's remember

Nice archives you dig up here (242!), wouldn't have been surprised to hear it in somewhat "autonomic" podcast :e:

That music used to give me nightmares, that guys voice and the stories he told were just freaky, used to always catch it cos it was after the Simpsons or Prime Time Wrestling, cant remember which, and just had to switch channels...
