Is James Blake overrated?
Re: Is James Blake overrated?
He has some good tunes. But some people suck his dick so hard I'm starting to think he really is overrated.

"over-rated" doesn't really exist. (unless we're talking about lil wayne or drake or kanye west, etc ; )
if enough people rate something for someone to believe it is "over-rated," it essentially can't be inherently.
it also implies that those that "rate" are "rating" for some other reason, i.e. from hype and not because it's any good, which is fairly insulting and insinuating.
Kani, nailed this one.
OVER HATED.
(fwiw i think he's hit or miss....kinda like Mount Kimbie. i just gotta be in the right mood to listen. but I like his pallete.)

I see why people like him but his music is a bit pretentious for me
Re: Is James Blake overrated?
theres a lot of overrated repetitive music within dubstep. not least some of the stuff made by a lot of the haters on these boards. but james blake is a long way from being included in that. absolutely brilliant producer. his cover of feist's 'limit to your love' is chilling. its nice to hear a producer who uses instruments outside his laptop for once/

I dunno if its just me but I get an image of middle class goatee rocking students sitting in a silent room listening to their James Blake vinyls stroking their chins commenting on how the 'dynamic soundscapes are akin to a music illustration of broken Britain'prisoner wrote:in what way?tru_g wrote:I see why people like him but his music is a bit pretentious for me

I'm not hating on his tunes but I feel sometimes he comprimises whats fun about listening to music in an attempt to sound 'different' and 'experimental'

Oh, and that is worse than a bunch of white chavy Brits sitting around talking about how sick the new Katy Perry dubstep remix is?tru_g wrote:I dunno if its just me but I get an image of middle class goatee rocking students sitting in a silent room listening to their James Blake vinyls stroking their chins commenting on how the 'dynamic soundscapes are akin to a music illustration of broken Britain'prisoner wrote:in what way?tru_g wrote:I see why people like him but his music is a bit pretentious for me

People think Blake's music is pretentious because he uses nontraditional harmony and song structure. Sorry it's not just a 32 bar intro, 32 bar buzzsaw, 16 bar buildup, another 32 bar buzzsaw, repeat ad nauseum.

Re: Is James Blake overrated?
People need to relax and chill out a bit.
It's a question, the answer is going to be down to an individuals POINT OF VIEW!
It's only a matter of opinion. I find it strange when the questions can sometimes illicit such a vehement response from both sides.
Surely a person is entitled to their say without being the subject of cynicism, or a 'holier than thou' attitude.
For god's sake it's music, just because someone sticks their head above the parapet and says their not keen on something and/or that they
really like another.
It's not the end of civilization, aight!

Re: Is James Blake overrated?
i don't imagine james is pretentious, his sets include tracks like Beyonce - Diva and he loves to remix pop tunes... it's silly to believe that anyone who makes beat patterns with a little intricacy and implements a softer pallet of sounds is some kind of black turtleneck wearing douchbag writing a novel in starbucks on his mac, chin stroking to every new beat that he hears
see him live
looks like fun dance music to me
peep how stoked he gets at 2:52
i love it

James Blake is so pretentious,..
He is always talking about how filthy he is and how he is going to rape and then melt my face.
And how he is going to throw dubsteps' defiled corpse in the bin behind the Motel 8,

its not that different or experinmental compared to whats out there?
imo, letting your percieved image of the people who listen to an artist stop you likeing that music, is worse then being pretentious. its like uberpretentiousness.
Re: Is James Blake overrated?
James Blake is interesting. Something that 90% of producers nowadays sadly aren't.
How anyone who remix's Destinys Child (brilliantly) can be labelled as pretensious is beyond me.
Im supporting him in September, cant wait!

Re: Is James Blake overrated?
His remix to untolds stop what your doing is inspiring, the way it builds up and the melody is spot on and addictive! overrated i think not, Big producer!
