Your thought's on using Serato...
I've put on events and whenever I see someone set up with Serato or any other DJ software, I see other DJ's just frown and pretty much laugh at them.
What's your opinions on using Serato/VDJ/Traktor at gigs?
Personally, I think that if the music sounds good and the DJ is doing well, I couldn't give two f*cks what they are using.

International travel with vinyls is a pain. Vinyl cases get stolen at airports all too often! Serato/Traktor is the only way to go for the travelling DJ.
Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
Yeah agree on this ^^ But its the only advantage as far as Im concerned. Cant stand the sound you get with serato, gotta be vinyl for me.chico_red wrote:International travel with vinyls is a pain. Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
and if you do use Serato, then of course try playing wavs or flacs, not mp3s. A lot more similar sound to vinyl!
Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
serato/traktor is acceptable for me as long as you retain the key elements of mixing, using control vinyl. no magic beatmatch buttons allowed.
also, yeah avoid mp3s.

Serato does not have magic beatmatch buttons (even though people seem to think it does).HRKRT wrote:serato/traktor is acceptable for me as long as you retain the key elements of mixing, using control vinyl. no magic beatmatch buttons allowed.

main thing is get a SL3, not a SL1, easier to set up, and has better sound quality.
And if you are going to use Serato, set it up BEFORE the gig, don't be the cock who sets it up during someones set.

Anyone who points and laughs at someone for using serato is a helmet and their opinion will automatically mean nothing to me based on their ignorance. You cant auto-mix on serato you still need to actually mix, you just have the added bonus of built in fx, easily archived tunes, playlists, much cheaper music and it all fits into a laptop case.
I buy music to listen to and to have fun mixing with, if you buy music on vinyl and think that your somehow more of a music fan than me then your a twat (not aimed at op btw). Yeah, there are differences in how mp3's sound in comparison to vinyl but when I weigh up how much I notice the difference in sound to how much more I'd spend on vinyl over mp3's the sound difference is minimal.
tbh I have never seen dj's laugh at the idea of serato, not in seriousness, a wee laugh and a joke between friends but anyone who knows what their talking about knows how sick a program it actually is.

remember as well that a lot of big artists in the game use it as well, plastician and joker to name just two...miscreant wrote:Anyone who points and laughs at someone for using serato is a helmet and their opinion will automatically mean nothing to me based on their ignorance. Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
loefah aslo gave up his dubs for serato....
i love my serato, its saved me shit loads on releases that i only wanted 1 side of & my record bag is much lighter because i only have to carry maybe 10 actual vinyls (deep medi & dmz mainly) the rest is on my pc. totally agree that you should go set it up before the show tho....

Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
People need to start embracing technology.
Ive seen this before with cameras, people would have said anyone using photoshop or a digital SLR weren't real photographers because they were using technology.
Now pure film photographers are a rare breed. Eventually I think this is the way pure vinyl dj's will go.
Im not saying that Technics (or any other deck) will stop being used, but they'll be used with time coded vinyl most of the time. As for myself I still have my technics mainly because I cant bear to part with them for the silly second hand prices they go for now. But im also getting rid of my Denon cd decks and going completley midi/Traktor based. Now Im only a bedroom dj, but if i do ever play out I'll have no problem at all gigging with just a controller and laptop.
Fuck peoples opinions!
If someone only wants to use vinyl, and can afford it then fair play, but dont hate on anyone using the tools that are available!

Re: Your thought's on using Serato...
1 thing that annoys me about Serto DJs is the DJs that use it like there mixing normal vinyl. For me, if your using a piece of software like this you should use it to its full potential. For example i like to hook up a midi controler to my Serto setup and use it to control the FX aswell as switching to the next track (for ultra-fast mixes).
Just my opinion, whats the point in just doing standard mixes with it.... might aswell use vinyl
And yeh also try use just WAVs, it really does sound better
