entry level setup

Post by vazt » Sun Jul 11, 2010 2:05 am

Its about time I upgrade from my Oxygen 8 and doing production strictly in AKG's. I really am looking for more keys and something with pads. I am leaning towards the MPK49 but just read the thread and saw the complaints about the stiff pads :| For monitors probably the obligatory KRK8's. But my total price range is $700-1000 :? Any suggestions on getting the best bang for my buck?

I came across this but I haven't heard of those monitors before, anyone have?

prebuilt packages generally contain a decent piece of kit, then mediocre or shit gear
better off building your own

The 49's pads are stiff and nonresponsive. It is modable. It's just crazy opening up a brand new $350 piece of kit to mod it. Really, I would go for a $100 keyboard, and a padkontrol from korg. I received this bit of advice, and disregarded it to my detriment. Still though, there is a lot going for the 49, has a lot of nice features, but if pads is a requirement, not the best option.

Oxygen 49 it is I guess! lol. Per your guys advice I started looking at other options. I bid on the ox49 on ebay.. not thinking I would actually win it for under 65 bucks but I did. Somewhat disappointed but I think it was the right move. Now i will probably get the MPD24 or PadKontrol as suggested. Thanks.. :t:

Depends if you actually want to use the pads for like drumming and stuff. If so, pad kontrol by leaps and bounds. If the faders are more important, then get the akai. You could also get korg's nano kontrol if you want faders.

Thing you have to know about akai is akai isn't akai anymore. They went bankrupt, and were bought out. Their stuff now is akai light, or wakai. Just not very good. They had a lot of brand equity from back in the mpc days, but it is fading fast. I love my mpk, but the pads are the absolutely lowest point in that controller.

I vouch for the padkontrol because I like the pads and you can do some pretty crazy things with the x-y section as well
