Re: Recommendations of Sci-Fi novels to read.
Dune - Frank Herbert
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card (who lives about 5 blocks from me)
Neuromancer - William Gibson
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
Anything by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
man... I could go on and on
As far as fantasy...
Robert Lynn Asprin - All of his Myth series. Its comedic, fun, and easy to read.
Terry Goodkind - He holds nothing back in his most famous Sword of Truth series.
I would most recommend Dune and the Myth series from Robert Lynn Asprin.

Roadside Picnic - Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
Soviet sci-fi. Those Stalker games are loosely based on its concept.

yeah alot conterversy around it, some accusations plagiarism blah blah.. but as far it goes its an entertaining book, definitely no master piece but as far wanting to delve into another world and trip out, i'd give it a go.

Currently reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.
Really good so far.
On a fantasy ting, i'm also reading Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
Definately worth looking into if you fancy something a bit lengthy.

I'll post up a list of suggestions later when I get home. I think there may have been a thread with similar recommendations some time last year, will see if I can dig that up too.

imo go for dick
do androids dream of electric sheep is said to be amazing. Also blade runner is based on it.
Minority report is also based on one of his books (dick was actually the man who thought up the theory whether they could arrest you for a murder you'll do in the future or not.
And also a dozen other good novels.
