And funky is just a term that people created to try to distance themselves from a sound that has been chugging along for almost 30 years... It's just as funny as watching people call modern dubstep that sounds like old school dubstep "future garage"

@wolverine, let's not talk about silly ideas, or I'll start djing under the name sabertooth

Dubstepforum already is about all bass music, regardless of name.

In my eyes, anyway.

A name is just a name and with a name like 'dubstepforum' in 2010, you're more likely to get new people (including people who are into all genres you've listed) than with something more ambiguous like 'bass music forum' or something.

no it doesn't. early 90's dance music usually sounds dated (and that isn't to say i don't like it). the production techniques simply hadn't advanced far enough at that point. there's no way you could confuse a 1990 house production with a 2010 one. and that's only one of the reasons your statement is incorrect.

if you had said late 90's/early 00's you might have had a minor point. still, nothing sounds quite like funkystepz, lil silva, apple etc.

Just on like the future garage bit, i mean I know like alot of people are saying like a tune that has a 2 step beat and is dark is like future garage or something, which is all how dubstep started, but like if i was gonna put anything in the "future garage" basket, it would be people like joy orbison and shortstuff bits that are obviously influenced by garage, and have a slight swing and skippyness to them, but they dont sound like old dubstep.

I dont think the forum should change its name though, having a house sub forum is good enough for me lol

the song structures a sooooo similar tho... sure, we've come a long way production wise, but that doesn't mean that it's a new sound! i love funky, fwiw, i'm just not going to pretend like it's something new.

as for songs that might be confused with an early 90's production here's one just off the top of my head.

seckle posted a bunch in a thread a year or so ago when we discussed the same thing... one was that awesome row house mix that i love (you know what i mean , k-os sang "superstar part 0" over it"

i agree with Gene, for the most part

as for skimpi, im talking old dubstep like this

sure, it's gotten more polished, but to name it "future garage" is laughable to anyone over 30

boxxy wrote:something i've been pondering for some time now

what if this was a site for all forms of bass music?

dubstep, grime, future garage, UKG, funky, dubbage, house, dub, wonky, hip hop, juke, b-more, breaks, jungle, etc...

most of us love all of it

i know we have sub forums, but it's like old school raves: different rooms for diffrent sounds

sometimes it seems that this board would be a lot more exciting if it mirrored what is going on in the clubs at the moment, a blurring of the lines, a joining of sounds

would it be too messy?

would it disrespect the vibe?

most of the og's have gone
most of the mods don't even post on here anymore
is it time for a change?

what do you think?

dubway? seckle? fellow forumites?
Boxxy baby I like the way you think

I thought that girl from the youtube vids had discovered dubstep until I saw the "anyone over 30 can hear... " comment lol...

@boxxy - start your own forum... theres lots of free forum services out there. Sounds like you have a good idea of how you want it already, just a matter of setting it up, some very basic design work, and getting people over there.

really? you fail to see anything at all?? interesting...
agree to disagree, then

of course you can pick the most recent, fwd tracks and say, see how they're different?
lets discuss some of the early funky tunes, because that's what I was thinking of
sure it's progressed into it's own thing, but it's just a tiny sliver of a sound that has been here for a long, long time

never said it was exactly the same, just the structure of the beats is nothing new to me

fwiw, i love your blackdown mix, it's what got me into funky

also, no need to create a new forum, dissensus is pretty nice!

What if UK Funky changed it's name? PLEAAASSSSEEEE. BRUKSTEP BRUKSTEP BRUKSTEP!!

ahem.

Umm.. there are subforums for the genres you mentioned, and peeps can post anything they want within reason, anyways, so what would be the point in a name change? You don't change Starbucks branding after that branding has already made it a success, do you?

NEXT.

agree to disagree, then
the only similarity that i can see is the snare rhythm, but that's not a trait exclusive to funky, you can find it most house
