Great timing on this thread, I have been trying (and failing horribly) to understand some music theory in the last week after the realisation my tunes all have a touch of the Willy Wonka about them despite my best efforts at darker sounds...

Suffice to say, the above posts make my head feel like it's about to explode, but it's actually a bit easier to grasp when someone is talking about it on a forum than trying to make sense of some of the books I am reading.

lol, I'm not, I'm alright on modes from (badly) playing guitar, it's just modes don't get mentioned a lot outside of guitar world which is a shame as they are very useful for creating different moods with melody and they show how all keys/scales are interconnected.

I just checked out something on your triads list, the A natural minor scale is indeed played all on the white notes, useful for piano spastics like me

If you want instant musical evil, just use the note 6 semitones above your key/root note (ie. six keys on a piano above). it's sound when played is so nasty that it was actually banned in the middle ages and named "the devil's note". The heavy metal community has abused this note to good effect for years as has the blues community before it, check Black sabbath here using the devil's note (also called the flat fifth) in about the most simple way possible

I also recommend to everybody who wants to get serious about music theory to read "Music theory for computer musicians" by Michael Hewitt.
I find it confusing at times, like when the author throws in examples of chord inversions a couple of chapters before actually explaining what they are but apart from a few things like that,it's a great resource.
