i've been involved in indie scenes for short periods at a couple of points in my life. what eventually repulsed me both times (one of the things at least) was the attitude towards musics understood as 'black.' there was always an underlying or explicit disdain that came across either as outright mockery or, more insidiously, as some sort of ironic engagement - e.g. sticking a 'gangsta rap' in the middle of a set. at a certain point it became cool to say you liked public enemy or native tongues or whatever, and i'd think "yeah, i remember you making racist comments to me about those things in high school." so i'm very suspicious anytime something like this pops up where a black/urban/etc. music is colonized by people who use irony to mock the thing their borrowing and give them the escape hatch of saying "it was all a pisstake, of course we don't like that ghetto stuff." that and the fact that all of these indie-related scenes seem to be allergic to genuine sentiment. irony is a cultural plague.
on the money!
i've had long discussions with slightly more indie minded friends, and this pretty much sums up what i've been trying to say
i saw hadouken live in leeds a few months back (on the same bill as a friend's band) and i honestly enjoyed it. loads of energy live and i found it very funny during the scenester song how a lot of the people in the crowd who were in skinny jeans, polka dot dresses etc were put into this awkward position.
don't get me started on the band 'bono must die' though....takes 'irony' to the next fucking level.

i kinda hope that the nme doesn't touch dubstep as well. as i just really hate that magazine with a passion, as its just so commercial and shallow. i used to be part of the indie scene before i realised how much shite i was constantly being fed, how everything was hyped as if it was jesus, and most of all the dickhead fans. the fans are so image-centered, and ass-licking and the scene just contains such little originality nowadays. in the past i've gotten into bands when they're small, then nme has taken them on, pumped them up for all their worth and then eventually there would be thousands of sheep indie fans running at their shows which completely killed everything for me, as it took away from the music and enjoyment. so if nme were even to release a primer i would be dissapointed as it could mean that at the dubstep events we're flooded with these horrible scenesters. i personally hope that dubstep doesn't blow up, granted its growing (thats how i've become part of it), but it would take away so much about what i love about the scene. i love the tight community, the atmosphere and everyone's passion for the music. so i'm personally hoping that this dubstep attention from the indie scene fades away as quickly as its started.

I quite like that tune actually - it's not dubstep or grime but it's certainly better than shite like Razorlight or the Killers.
It's just pop - get over it for fucks sake
Got a feeling that (and in one case certainty) that probably some of the disses are coming from people that used to play in indie bands but didn't do quite so well - heh heh heh
Your precious underground is not threatened by this - makes a change to not hear the usual I am harder than thou shite that a lot of mc's do to death.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Pure and simple
Hmm....

Ben
its indisputable that so much of what they are is owed to grime. yet in their myspace, where are the acknowledgements?! where is JME?! every indie kid will go away thinking wow that guys got such an amazing delivery! its so vivid, and direct, how original! and jme continues to slave away doing his thing with little to no recognition
so the loose intentions in this case means that a very deep guy gets no recognition
so while i have a lot of time for fun music, i just cant feel comfortable with ppl making money from other peoples innovations combined with the sad fact of peoples' closed minds and perhaps even latent racism

Fair enough, but it's what the mainstream has been doing for ever, that's how it operates. I thought people had got used to that idea now. Maybe in this case it's a bit more blatent, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a nice track

I'll undercut you and do it for nothing

and unless they have clocked that, and are playing on that very thing, and thats the essence of what theyre doing, then i find it totally alienating and grim.
and even if it is, nathan barley in a way illegitimises that whole approach to art/satire now, the popular climate is as such that it no longer carries so much value (as it did say when Brass Eye came out)
So you're suggesting what they're doing is racist? That even people enjoying their music is encouraging racism?
Well ok, prove it.
nah that theyre benefiting from the narrow-mindedness (racism is too complicated to assume without a bigger discussion) of others. playing up to a situation which i find depressing

Seeing Lethal Bizzle booked to play at White Heat (like the indie equivalent of FWD almost in london)...i just couldn't help but think that lethal would be seen as this joke act, almost a novelty. almost as if to say "look! it's a real rapper! let's pretend to do gun fingers and say brap a few times"
