Big Drums

Post by ENNO » Tue Jul 20, 2010 1:14 pm

I tried searching there but there are so many thread with the word drum and big in it I would have been searching for days.

Im finding it hard to make my drums present in some of my tracks without side chaining. Seems most of the big producers do the by leveling out the frequency's of the drums and sub so it not chopping the sub up every time the drum kicks. Does any have any information on this?

All help much appreciated :t:

The search function is awful, granted, there's a ton of information about this in the production bible bit though.

Big drums are so 2009. 2011 is all about small drums.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

You need to give your track some extra headroom for each sound to sit more prominently. I usually have my kicks peaking around -8db. Sub sits right around -9 or so and snares between -8 and -10. You need to give each sound enough headroom to process itself. As stated in a previous thread, if your kick is peaking at -6 and your bass is also peaking at -6, you've essentially given up all you headroom to just 2 sounds and no longer have room for anything else. Once this happens everything begins to fight for space in the mix but the only way to do it is by taking it from another sound. It becomes a frequency war and the strong always prevail.

Fuckit bro, side chaining isn't a sin. Jezuz won't sneak into your window at night and give you a blowy.

Read the moneyshot thread. Read the whole thing, then read it again. Life changing thread, no joke.
