I think some people get scared away from ableton via session view. Pretty sick if you are interested in using it for live application but tbh with you I don't use it at all except for the mixer of course. I use ableton like your standard sequencer. If I ever do get a live thing going tho it is nice that sesh is already there waiting for me to use.

In my brief foray into live, I found the arrange page to be clunky relative to the others, but session bro, especially for someone like you who spends your time in the green pastures, is just amazing. Play your daw like a mf instrument. Go live in your studio, that's the idea. Get back to that place where you can just jam, but with a 1024 piece orchestra. Print the thing into the arrange page, make your tweaks, and you're done w/ your track. yeah boi.

interested in what you mean by 'clunky'. i've seen a couple guys here say that about arrangement view and i've never really understood it. having switched from FL, live's arrangement view feels like putty in how easy it is to mould and sculpt the arrangement.

8 had a good playlist. 9.5 is better.

First of all, any arrange page that has dedicated lanes to mixer channels is clunky in my opinion.

The automation in live is awfully clunky.

Screen real real estate is poorly used.

The way audio is depicted... seems like it's less tangible than other arrange pages.

Zoom and transport is awkward.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Well maybe I do like for instance the zooms when I first started using Live tweaked me out but it didn't take me long to become a champ at it and now I wouldn't want it any other way. I started a session with a friend in Reason and was just cussing the whole time about how slow everything was, changing tool tips etc. The space management in Live is the best I have seen imo. I only see what I want to see and everything else is a click away at most. I would say the automation could be worked on I'll give you that but as it is it is quick and easy for me. And what do you mean arrange page? Like the session view, I don't get what you are saying there. The thing is you haven't used it enough to get used to it so your comments don't mean much. There is a bit of a learning curve to any program and that said I caught on with Live quicker than anything else I have ever used.

With Fruity I can't think with the pattern based sequencers. That might seem like a crazy statement coming from a Live user but I don't use it like that. It gives you the options to use it the way you want to. When I found out I could just use the sequencer linearly like I was used to I was sold on it.

I did 20-30 projects in live. Hell, I even built a support for my monitor to suit live's less than ideal layout. By no means am I live expert, but I spent some time in there fo sho.

Oh, one really nice thing about live is the ability to midi sequence from the keyboard. Fl has some of the features but not enough to where you can actually write and edit your phrases in the piano roll entirely from the keyboard.

That is not exactly a "brief foray" in my estimation but ok.

I really don't even understand why you would do this to yourself in these days and times but to each their own.

Oh forget it man lol. If you did multiple projects in it then you should know it well enough, I got the impression you just checked it out and that was it. I have had some brief forays with most of the DAWs mentioned in this thread but that doesn't mean I know anything about them. ANYWAY... take care of head this isn't the best place for your medical condition lol. I think I am starting to get one myself.

To get away from staring at a computer screen as much as possible. It's a personal thing, recently become a massive inspiration killer for me.

I feel you on that one. Especially if you work in front of a computer screen all day for a day job.

Plus, the old school hardware seq/sampler work flow is going to produce a different sound and likely structure, it's close to unavoidable. Plus, you actually have to listen to your toon the whole time you're working on it. No visuals about what is what and where shit is, and what it is. All ears. It's a strong argument, isn't it?

But where do you get your samples from for the akai?

Hit the nail on the head.

Mixture of live outboard sampling and wav samples (drum packs etc) built up over the years that I used to use for computer based production.

I can totally imagine beat making, sequencing, arranging with that kind of set up, I miss it. But sound design on the computer is tha shit, it's unmatched except for those with very deep pockets. That's where I fall off on that type of set up, the sound design.
