I would like to know what people think.

Mount Kimbie is dubstep for people who listen to IDM. I have a hard time seeing many dubstep heads here _really_ getting into this album. That being said I guess it's ok but after one listen I won't be going back to it again. Ever.

Listen from 1.30 onwards of this track
I can say with all honesty that it completely speaks for itself - incredible production

They make outstanding music full stop. Its not tied to any genre and stands at the fringe of a few.
It sounds as ridiculously good in the club as it does on your personal headphones (as does most Hotflush stuff which is mastered to fooking perfection BIG UP Scuba). Can be insanely deep and emotive, and captures the feeling that got me into dubstep in the first place. Ethereal, haunting and bass driven.
It is however mature music, is not aimed at your average dubstep raver, and will completely pass over the heads of some people into dubstep (especially those who are only into dubstep). This is NOT a bad thing. I was not listening to esoteric Jazz or the like when I was 16-19ish, I was listening to aggressive fuelled beats that were accompaniment to my addled club adventures.
I could go on and list the attributes of their music that I enjoy but I feel listening to it on your own just once was enough for me to appreciate its full value.

Honestly, it's a little softbatch. It's very good for what it is but I like my music with a little more edge and aggression, I find their record a little too pleasant. I understand why a certain crowd is gaga for them but they're not really my thing.

agreed. it doesn't have that immediate adrenaline rush that the aggressive dubstep panders to, can take a few listens to actually catch all the nuances and wrap your head around. something i didn't do enough when i was younger. it's fun now to appreciate things i never would have beforeMASKle wrote:They make outstanding music full stop. I absolutely detest IDM, I would say mount kimbie is more for people who like funk, soul, jazz, folk, 2step, hip hop and sub bass. I feel it is more for people who enjoy and listen to a wide variety of music. Def not for cats stuck in one or two tiny genre's.spec wrote:(Full disclosure I love Hotflush......buuuuuuuut)

Imho, of course

Most blanket statement ever. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.MASKle wrote:

Totally agree that this isn't, and shouldn't be expected to be, an album for "the heads." I would say though that it could appeal to people who dig those genres, but when it comes down to it the scope of it's appeal may be more narrow.boxxy wrote:I absolutely detest IDM, I would say mount kimbie is more for people who like funk, soul, jazz, folk, 2step, hip hop and sub bass. And of course. Imho.

Re: What's with all the hype about Mount Kimbie?
Their two EPs are some of the best music I've heard of the past few years...I haven't heard the album enough to judge it properly, but I think they're pretty great. Whoever said it's not for "dubstep heads" is totally wrong in my case; I've been into dubstep since the beginning and love Mount Kimbie's stuff...in fact, it reminds me of a lot of the really early DMZ/Kode9/Horsepower stuff to be honest.

IDM?
just curious as to where you see the IDM connection? also, who's a head? what's the criteria?
agreed with cloak, that this stuff is very nostalgic
to each their own tho!

Up until this point, I have always read their name as Mount Kimble.
Regardless, they make beautiful music.

Crooks & Lovers is definitely one of the best albums so far this year for me.
