Producing drumstep

was listening to some of my favorite planet mu idm a few years ago, and then it was all like, this isn't idm, this is dubstep. I wonder what the other million sub-genre's of idm are named.

Try to get the drums more involved...this was my first drumstep track.

the trick is to get the shishy/topend bit rolling, throw in a shit load of shakers, hihats, rides, tambs at 16ths and lots of ghost note snares on the off beat

ive noticed with drumstep they still use the amens but as a roll sorta thing get an amen chop out the middle bit of the loop (the percy bit) and use it as a hi hat on the 16ths and work ya half sped beat around it. oh and mabey layer a rim over the top of it.

I think this is a rather silly statement considering quite a few people get into making music BECAUSE of a certain genre, not the other way around.

Useful in marketing terms - but from history we all know that when a scene starts to separate and label itself a dozen different ways that scene is dying ...

Very true, but in the wake a whole stack of new and awesome stuff arrives. If you're too jaded to experience new things then you'll be just that, jaded. Dubstep is an awesome genre that was spawned from a few other parent-genres, so what we experience and love now, isn't going to be around in 10 years. Bring on the brostep!

people should make music how they want it to sound, not make it so that it will fall into a certain genre perfectly. if people want to make music that feels like Romanian Folk Polka, they should go ahead and do it, but they shouldn't say "Okay, I need to make a Romanian Folk Polka tune right now, how exactly do I do that?". If a person wants their music to feel a certain way, it should happen on it's own, and not because someone tells them how to do it.

i'm saying you should contribute to the sound and not the genre. genres are just stupid labels made to sell things and associate them with each other. but in my opinion, that's not how music should be handled.

If you love the genre, and want to contribute to it, just do it. Just make music that sounds like it. Asking "HOW DO I MAKE MUSIC THAT SOUNDS LIKE THIS" defeats the purpose of making music in the first place
