Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
I read in Blackdown's interveiw with Oneman he was saying how over the next ten years club soundsystems are going to change. They are gonna be geared towards digital/mp3's far more so vinyl probably won't even sound the best format in a club.

Isn't the new system at Plastic People supposed to be like a studio type system....i.e. digital sound favoured?
I don't turn on Korn to get it on, I be playin Digi Mystikz 'til the dawn

ill fuckin carry it for him! ahaha

Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
This thread reminds me of why I don't really mind living in a smaller town...the few spots that there are to throw shows only have sound, but it's good sound.
I might have to lug a couple tables to the venue when I want to play out, but I get to play all vinyl, on a setup that isn't dodgy!

At my Summerball him and Danny Byrd and Whitey were all on the vinyls (I know the latter two are DNB DJ's, but still)

this is fucked that clubs don't bother with turntables anymore or look after them. hopefully producers will keep releasing on vinyl though rather than just a digital version...

5 years max. Producers arent gonna bother spending all this money on getting vinyl's pressed when the people who buy them can't even use them in clubs anymore.mashmash wrote:this is fucked that clubs don't bother with turntables anymore or look after them. hopefully producers will keep releasing on vinyl though rather than just a digital version...

Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
Hey, here's a piece of good news: for the last 2 years, more records have been sold in greater numbers every year while CD sales figures are dropping dramatically. I believe the invisible hand of the market will intervene and people will begin to realize in greater numbers each year the market value of records. People pronounced records to be dead 25 years ago,yet certain genres kept the format alive which led to a revival and is now a profitable enterprise once again.
It's really all a slippery slope. I feel that the clubs won't necessarily make it more geared to mp3s simply because the closer you integrate with mp3s, the less need there is for an actual DJ. You might as well just be playing mixes or satellite radio. People will pay to hear a live DJ, the game has to adapt and most likely will.

Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
Admittedly clubs are notoriously bad at looking after decks, we went to play in Reading and when they got the decks out of the cupboard a tone arm was completely snapped in half, luckly I'd brought a few CDs so could still do the set (they had 9 CDJ 1000s in that venue and only one working turntable) and one I've had to DJ with one deck & serato internally on the other deck, skippy needles, wobbly tables, fucked up mixers, monitors the list goes on
BUT the promoter should be checking that the set up is good enough for DJs such as Youngsta to come and play, I know I certainly do, any problems I'll sort waaay before the night begins, if it means going home to pick up the turntables, it should be done. Why pay out for DJs & let your punters pay out for them too, to then do a half arsed job of setting up?!? Madness..
On another note, the more DJs put up with the fact that the decks are faulty and just hop on the CDJs the worst its gonna get. Out to Plastician, Youngsta and the like, next time your Technics are inadequate kick up a right stink and let 'em know that its unacceptable .
BTW, unless I KNOW the venue, I'm rolling with spare needles, vinyl, serato, audio cds, mp3 cds, laptop and more recently, blue-tac for dodgy tone arms.

rather shocking that some clubs cant look after their gear when people go to these places to see someone/people play out...

Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
Mixing with CD's is a lot easier in my opinion (beatmatching and cue-ing is a lot quicker).plastician wrote: it takes the same amount of skill to mix CD's as it does with vinyl. I actually find it more difficult with CD's
But there is so much more than that.. I choose vinyl over digital because as an "artist" I find it much more comfortable working with colors & images, really it helps me build up a set how I want them to sound and it also helps me mix "in key".
When I'm using only CD's/serato, all I see is just a shit load of names and numbers, personally I need to see something more then that to make a good set, the artwork of the vinyl gives me the flow. I never plan my sets, I think when I try that, it makes my sets sound a bit gay in some way, don't know why but it just happens.. It's all about picking the right records in your bag at the right time and when you're in the club in front of the crowd you know exactly what's the right tune to play..
Let's say I'm playing at some club, and I'm playing this Jack Sparrow tune (Terminal), and as soon as I'm done mixing it, I know exactly which tune i want to mix next (Addison Groove - Footcrab), but I'm not thinking of some certain name or an artist, I'm thinking about some image/colors (in that case, a bright red image with white letters).. And then I start looking it up in my record bag, and when I'm digging, I'm not reading the names on the records at all, I'm simply looking for some artwork that is stuck in my mind, and then I find the right record in the bag in a few seconds and put it on the decks and start mixing, voila...
Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
I find it absolutely mind bloggling mixing with CDs haha..
In the last like a year and a bit since ive been playing out and learning the ropes, ive only had 3 venues with fully working decks, with the pitch slider looked after with good needles and had the decks set up so they didnt' skip and jump about every where... I mean, spesh if you're not paying someone in cash, you might as well make sure the medium they're playing on is in good order..Its quite a shame
I am not one of these "down with CDJs" kinda person, I think they're just as good as vinyl i just haven't made the switch cause they're so expensive to get a pair to practice on!

yeah man, there are a few clubs over this way with decent decks, but you best be taking your own needles =/ (or hope whoever is running the gig brings some)ammo wrote:Very unfortunate but very common

for one the pitch doesn't waver at all - once it's locked it's locked - you don't have to keep nudging it.

Re: DJ Youngsta - using CD's now??
Ditto cant emphasise just how much of a problem this is and also most promoters do their soundcheck on cdjs so vinyl sounds muffled by comparison - cds might not be as good as vinyl/serato for certain things (rewinds/beat juggling etc) but they are much more reliable and at the end of the day the audience doesnt really give a fuk about formats they'd much rather see a smooth set on cds than a dodgy set on vinyl, can really kill the vibe when there's skipping needles/dodgy technics outputs etcplastician wrote:Take it from me, its nothing to do with money.
Clubs aren't looking after their decks, and with sound systems getting ever louder, they are becoming a nightmare to work with.
I too have conceded that I'm probably going to have to stop using the Serato vinyl and switch to Serato CD's soon. Skipping needles, people jumping near the DJ booths and loads of other factors make it nearly impossible to play an hour set without some kind of hindrance to your set.
Its definitely more about this than money I think.
