Where to start

Post by decklyn » Mon Mar 05, 2007 1:55 am

I've been producing down tempo for years and years, and have more recently started making some dnb.

I'd like to try my hand at dubstep as I love the sound and would feel quite at home here. I'm just wondering some pretty basic info.

What is the average speed of a dubstep track? (I'm guessing about 70/140bpm).

Are you using single hits more than breaks? Been so long since I've started a track without a break!

Thanks!

sorry for the incredibly basic questions. I've had a few drinks and the production isn't working tonight. Feeling a touch discouraged and looking for some gentle advice. :-P

really anything goes. you could chop up a couple breaks and create some interesting effects, or you could use single hits... just depends on what you want to convey in your 'musical message'.

that being said... i've been using a lot of single hits lately. if you listen to a lot of dubstep, it seems like muted 909 kicks are rather popular. ya know, something that hits hard and fast, but is low enough to where you feel it more than hear it.. but you hear it just enough :)

another common production technique in dubstep is reverb on the snare. though most people do it, its definitely not neccesarry, its just what most people do.

hope all this helps, we'd love to hear your tunes :)

In terms of what speed most DJs will mix at, this is about right.

Thanks alot for all responses. Yeah listening to more dubstep lately and hearing all the subtle nuances. You're about to see another dnb defector I imagine. Sitting on the verge of my first dnb release. Lol will be funny when I get a release and then just drop out.

Starting to buy dubstep on wax and bringing all fellow djs out to see the dubstep movement in action. It takes a bit of ketamine sometimes to slow down the junglists, but everyone is seeing that the movement is real. :-P

Big up the dubstep movement.
