Reporting file sharing abuse etc... for labels and artists.

Post by Depone » Tue Aug 10, 2010 9:55 pm

Getting a link on mediafire etc.. removed can be a actually daunting due to the legal waffle you have to provide. They are looking for certain bits of lingo so that you have to satisfy their legal requirements.

See here for the list you have to fulfill (http://support.mediafire.com/index.php? ... d=62&nav=0)

Ok so recently I have found a few of my tracks on online sharing sites shared on certain dodgey russian websites, blogs, torrent sites etc... i'm not going to name tracks for obvious reasons.

And I have recently had great success in getting the offending links removed.
I have even received personal apologies from these online sharers when confronted buy a concise, polite and reasonable attitude, and to make them realise that you and they are on the same level, and not a massive corporation.

Now... the tricky part is that once they are out, they are out. Wether it be a leaked release or its commercially available. But catch the sharing soon enough, and you may be able to slow it down enough to make a diference.

Now to the point...
I have made a sort of 'template' ( i use this loosely as each is slightly different) to use for writing to the abuse reporting section of these sites, such as mediafire, rapidshare, hotfile, sendspace etc... and they all more or less require what i have worded in this 'template' legally to remove the offending file from their servers. I have used it on over 7 occasions and have worked well so far without hesitation on their part.

Its a .rtf (rich text format) text file, will be fine on windowze and os x. I have left the bits coloured red with instructions on what to fill out. Make sure you double check it before sending.

http://www.mediafire.com/?a3em4mw90yes4tn

Now, I realise that legally that not every case is the same, as different contracts waiver and change. So this should be used as a GUIDE .
Be careful if making false accusations, and make sure if YOU or the LABEL own the copyright. (usually the label as you sign it to them)

Hope this of some help to people. 8)

Nice one man, unfortunate to hear that your tunes are being torrented etc... but then it's good to hear the peeps are decent enough to take the links down once you ask :) good post as always Dep and I'm sure loadsa producers will find this useful! :)

The point of this post is not to discus the benefits of the exposure, but if you have to do this as to not jeopardize its release.

Probably going to be using this at some point. Cheers :)
A wise piece of advice to anyone though, is DON'T give your dubs that you've worked hard to create to just anyone, give them only to people you trust and know, though even then stuff gets out sometimes as in Depone's case I think...

It's a rough business trying to keep shit bottled up but its a mandatory part of being an artist/running a label

It's good once you've had a track removed successfully to keep the template around like depone has done. Mediafire is arguably the toughest to get shit taken down from. This should help a lot of people out

As far as blogs/individuals posting shit most of them (if talked to) will take them down. I've come across a few people who have been standoffish and when I explain to them our point of view they usually cooperate.

I've begun to watermark our mp3s so if something does get out there we can cut said person off from promos in the future.

Thanks Depone. Good on you for the relevant, important, useful post. I think a question worth asking you is how you actually found out that your tracks were on these sites?

Nice! I think if i were a label with some viable profits, i would most def invest in this.

I actually found out through people telling me that they saw it on a dodgey russian website (not going to name it here) and i also have Google alerts set up with some keywords in place.
Give it a go, It emails you when your name has come up on searchable results (does not cover private torrent sites tho :( ) Either once a week, as it happens or a summery over a months etc...

Ive been doing this for a while and Im really glad someone else is discussing it. Piracy effects everyone in the music industry, and I speak out against file sharing alot, much to the displeasure of people throughout the hacker communities I lurk in.

filestube . com >>> a free rapidshare and mediafire search engine. I recommend you type anyone whos name you can think of, catalogue numbers, ect. and report the files you find using depones strategy immediately. Its a shame people abuse legitimate, useful services to provide a home for piracy.

Problem is, theres little or no protection over what people share between themselves over aim etc... Recently I have noticed a surge of people 'trading dubs' like some fucking kind of dell boy.

It has come to light recently that bananabombers tracks were leaked due to this. And i believe mine may have also been shared this way in the first leak.

I cant trust 80% of my aim list, so im now only sending to decent labels and the trusted few on my contacts list.

that's why you don't share your shit all over to people/djs you barely know, especially if you plan on shopping it around to labels
the "filth"/youtube crew/fb dubstep group have no qualms about sharing, pirating, ripping etc music so all it takes is one wrong person to get it in order for it to spread like monkey aids

that and UTILIZE YOUR ID3 TAGS if it's such a concern, or simple digital watermarks if you're going to be mass sending out a tune in bulk

Found some uttter fanny had posted my track on youtube but also put a link to download a .rar in the description.

On the flip side... i do wonder if the piracy is actually a great device for marketing yourself to a shit load of people. I think it's pretty hard to make money of selling tracks, so perhaps the money 'lost' (would they have been a sale anyways?) is better 'spent' by getting your music in front of millions of people who wouldn't have bought it anyways.

But for Promo purposes... send it to the label and the label only.
It's the only way.

Thing is I protected the said track really well, and only sent it to like 7 or so well known dj's. I was careful.
I found that it was from one of the people i sent it to, as it did have the id3 tags i put in place so i knew it was from my list of contacts.
