Found some uttter fanny had posted my track on youtube but also put a link to download a .rar in the description.

On the flip side... i do wonder if the piracy is actually a great device for marketing yourself to a shit load of people. I think it's pretty hard to make money of selling tracks, so perhaps the money 'lost' (would they have been a sale anyways?) is better 'spent' by getting your music in front of millions of people who wouldn't have bought it anyways.

Depends on if you want to make money for the track. A remix I made has appeared on various obscure filesharing type sites but there's nothing I can do because I can't make any commercial gain from it anyway, it being an unoffical remix. So in this way the publicity, however small, is "good". On the other hand should I ever make a track that is about to be released/has been released and it was leaked all over the place I'd really be severely hacked off.

At the end of the day it's going to happen regardless. It would appear that someone buys the track as soon as it's released and it ends up in giant torrent packs from Russia. Fuck knows how this works - maybe they have someone on the inside handing out new releases? Def think there can be methods to use this to your advantage such as doing an obscure edit and zip it up with a txt file about you and seed it yourself (anonymously of course!) for example. I'm sure some 'big' band will at some point release an album via torrent if it's not already been done yet.

I do however see a few hypocrites (mentioning no names, but you know who you are) who have a problem with people pirating the work that they put effort into, but have no problem pirating the DAW's and synths they used to create their work. If you pirate to create your track, don't complain when it gets pirated. Simples.

Really appreciate this Depone! Countless times i've found our releases on all these download sites.

Well I think the people who go out of their way to find releases on usenet or irc, or who have access to FTPs really had no intention of buying the music anyway. What's good about getting music removed from filesharing sites is that it does help stop people who are just looking for the music on search engines like google. I'm sure you know if you type a song name into google the first page is usually always filled with rapidsearch sites, or even straight up mediafire links to download it. The person seeing those links might have been searching google to buy it, but if a download pops right up on google, the chances of them buying it lessen a great deal.
