honestly, not everyone is up on obscure EDM sub-genres . alot of people just watch mtv and listen to the radio and live in bumblefuck towns out in the sticks, and have no exposure to underground music

so really, yes it's dumb but im not mad at them. as scared as everyone is of dubstep going "mainstream" , the majority of people don't know what it is, nor do they realize it has little to nothing to do with dub

Yeah, a lot of what I hear as more "traditional" dubstep sounds a lot like what we were calling dub back in the 1990's (think Bill Laswell, and that whole crew). Hence the reference to "dub"

And this is definitely not that (whatever you want to call it)

some dubstep producers use dub as a strong influence, yes, but "traditional dubstep" is a pretty loose term. i wouldn't say loefah's tunes for example, sound anything like dub

the kids calling dubstep dub know that dub is it's own genre but they also know that amongst their scenester pals it's short for dubstep

sorta like maybe calling weed "smoke".

also like how the internet calls mp3s dubs

sometimes we call weedsacks "dubs" (i.e. 20's). just words.

Hence the quotes around "traditional". It's hard to make generalizations about any genre. The fact that so many people have very different ideas of what dubstep is, is a good thing in my opinion. It means the style has evolved beyond it's roots and become a stylistic influence across other genres.
