Producers and Day Jobs?

Post by joeki » Sat Aug 14, 2010 1:52 pm

I'm very curious about this. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not asking for everybody's Average Year income here. I'm just wondering at what point it is possible to become a full time DJ/Producer and not hold down a job anymore.

Anyone of the established (or less established names) care to comment?

edit

and what about label owners?

Always think about this

I remember in that Red Bull interview Mala says he used work in a Vodafone shop or something like that

That would be madness to see that

He doesn't produce as much or own a label but I know Youngsta works in BM Soho

But I'm sure for a DJ, working in a record shop is hardly like a day down the salt mines.

Most decently known names seem to be able to live off their music these days. Didn't Cyrus and Distance used to be builders?

I guess the only time you should ditch 'proper' work is when you know you can, or are very close to being able to pay your bills using money from gigs etc.

i would say that if you're keeping up a steady schedule of releases on decent-sized, fairly established labels - let's say 6 or 7 a year - and gigging as much as you cna, then you'll probably be able to quit your day job. but it'll probably involve somewhat of a pay cut. if you've got a mortgage or kids, forget it

Kode9's a Ph.D in philosophy mate - obtained at Warwick (regarded as one of, if not the best institution for the study of continental philosophy) 8)

Alongside duties as label head and producer, he's also undertaking academic research and teaching postgrads at a London uni. Busy, busy man.

thanks for the imput so far.

Just giving this a bump. I'm still hoping one of the really established names get's involved in this.
Not that I don't appreciate everyone's input so far.

I'm just curious about these stories you know. How it all came to be. When someone finally catches a break.
It's a bit like dreaming for most of us in the end :)

And yeah, kids and mortgage and all obligations etc. I can understand that.

Doesn't Mala have kids?

best job for a producer is to grow / sell drugs out your house. not joking here. literally can spend so much time producing and still make more then you would at your avarage shitty mcdonalds minimum wage job.
