levels and sample choices are the most importent imo and things that have a big dynamic range need to be compressed but don't overdo it

this is the second part of smoothy wich is harder then the first part
both are gonna be merged together into one track

different sound on this one, I think it needs stronger clap/snare

On my last mixdown I routed all my percussion channels after EQing them to a send channel, and compressed the shit out of it. It's my best sounding thing yet (I'm still really new though). I don't know if this is real advice as it's just something I tried that seemed to sound good to me, I don't know if it's common practice in production or whatever. I'm still learning about compression & don't know much. I'll listen to your track and tell you more maybe.

I wrongly posted this as a thread, so I'll just repost it here if no one minds. :) I'll be sure to provide feedback to anyone else when I can.
I've been getting into dubstep for the past year or so and have been working on some tunes in isolation (very little feedback from others), nothing amazing. Last night I got a few ideas and threw this song together, and I was pleased with it, but... Like all my songs or ideas, there's something wrong with it. No matter how much I mix or master, EQ or tweak, it always sounds... unprofessional compared to many artists I hear. I understand this is a given, especially with a newcomer, but I was wondering if there were ways I could make my tracks sound more vibrant, or less flat. In terms of velocity, dynamics, EQ, compression and panning, I've worked with everything to my liking, but the end result doesn't meet my standards. After reading the dubstep production bible and searching around, I'm still in a tough position, I don't understand if it's the samples I use, the effects I use, or just my style of production. I decided to finally get some feedback today and I was hoping the Dubstep Forum could help.

Here is a sample of the track from last night, if you could please give it a listen and give me some tips, it would be highly appreciated.

this isn't a good idea.. it's far better to tastefully compress, EQ and level each hit properly - get it right on this level and umbrella compression won't be necessary. generally putting heavy compression on the master and even the whole kit isn't the way to go. mixing is by no means easy, and i can't profess to be a master of it, i'm still learning all the time, but cutting corners like this won't help your sound, sorry

Well I've been told the opposite, so y'know... take nothing as fact. It CAN help "glue" it together. Might not want to over do it, 'cos you want percussion to sorta' "dance" a bit. Vary the velocity/volume of the hits, as well.
For example...
-------------------------
------------
-----
----------------

So take that as velocity^ (flip it verticle, if this makes sense) as an example of, say, a hi hat pattern

EDIT: my bad, this is kind of off topic, but still; Good way to make percs move :)

Love the intro, love the notation just don't like the synths used :/

Change up the synths and whatnot and I think you got yourself a winner for sure!

Hey fellas, was wondering if I could get some feedback from you. I just switched to reason, and this is my first go at producing with it.. I don't have a huge knowledge of synthesis, but have figured out how to get some sounds that I dig by twisting knobs. I'm a long time dubstep fan, but new to producing it, or at least something I thought didn't sound like shit (I mainly did hiphop). Anyways, any ideas/pointers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

As a side note, this isn't remotely close to being mixed down. I don't have studio monitors, so this was done with headphones and my levels are off.

Really like your track! nice drums sound and feel, maybe something else could happen during the first drop after the intro. the wobble in the second drop might be a bit more various, to keep things interesting. overall i love the sound and mood of your track, looking forward to hear its progresses !

@Matthew-B: Pretty cool! some cool sounds n shit! haven't really heard that many drumstep songs so I'm no expert but maybe i'd lower the volume on the drums just a tad so you can hear your synths a lil better?

@Dav.id: Sick dude I like it! Yea I agree with you, It needs a harder snare!!!! layer on some white noise! :D

I had some time to work on my project a lil, heres the outcome :D
Still working on making the vocals deeper n' dirty  *no luck* <---- any tips? currently f'ing around with the vocoder

I like the bass, and I like the phase on the bass, but maybe a little less on the phase? I like it when it's in time with a fill or something, it ... fills in the fill... sounds good.

Love the percussion, just missing the kick a bit, 'sabit quiet.

I kinda like it, sounds unique. I just don't like how even the drums are. The bass is too far behind the drums as well, bring it out in front. It sounds too spread out or something. But I like how everything sounds. Final word would be: mix up the drums a bit, and bring the bass in front.

I like this sound. The drums sound kind of ripped, but in an almost good way. Kinda minimal and industrial sounding. I like it.

This is something I threw together earlier. Only started a few weeks ago with Reason, but have switched to Ableton, which is what this is made in. Really just started to get used to it today, and was playing about with drums etc...
Hows it sounding so far?

Sound alright...needs a bit more to hear where the tracks going tho
