but why if some people choose to drop a bit of jamacian lingo in thier speech is it seen as people trying to be something they are not, i some time say the odd word in french or spanish 'who moi?' for example.....so am i trying to be french now am i?

whats the diff? nothing. jus like other heads are saying, its jus all part of embracing other peoples cultures.....

Well well.. what a mental thread. Suppose thats the point of airing this kind of shit though... it gets people talking right ? Shame some just bailed on it and resorted to throwing insults about. There's been some good points raised though still. Stuff thats even made me reconsider how i feel about it all.

I guess if i've learned anything from this little ramble, sharing slang is a unquestionably a good thing.. it extends language, breaks down barriers and keeps things fresh. Having said that I'm still firm that its sometimes a bit dumb and waters down a point when incorporated by someone who's dropping it in there 'just to sound cooler'.

actually in india - marijuana has always been known as charas for the hash and ganga for weed. afeem for the opium... from way way back in the 17th century and shit.

my people's been opium and pot heads from day...says alot doesnt it!

i dont think the word ganja as u know it came from the river ganga.

Can't find out, I think they are two different words as one as translated with a j, the plant and one with a g, the river. But they both come from the Himalayas so possible, there is a city in Azerbajan called Ganja as well lol, and it is meant to be a common girls name in India, and just means plant as well. All the religions hijacked it though, how could you come up with an idea like God without being high?

Joker! Anyone is free to speak in any way they please as far as I know, but everyone may as well bear in mind that out of the millions of different dialects in the world, some have differernt assosciations than others, and when one becomes culturally popular, a lot of people will be pissed about their culture being hijacked and misinterpreted. But this happens all across the world and there's nothing we can do about it, look at the variety of influences Japanese kids draw on for their youth cultures! Anyway there are many different ways of being influenced by other cultures as you discover them, I just find it interesting that a tiny island as Jamaica has such a massive cultural capital, although it is mainly misunderstood, used to flog holidays, bank accounts, drinks, music you name it, I'm sure not everyone is fuming that people want to copy the way they talk, dress, eat, look and the music they listen to. Also don't think i'm getting at you Merkin, but how do you know that the people on the forum don't have friendships or relationships with Jamaican people as well, it seems to mean that you are entitled to an opinion in your case.

Im absolutely certain loads of people do, and I know for a fact there are man/woman on here who are originally from the Islands but im also sure there are plenty of folk who's only encounter with a West Indian has been buying some chicken at carnival (and if you live out in the sticks somewhere, thats not exactly your fault either!). Being a teacher, i hear loads of kids (non Afro-CAribbean) saying 'fassehole this','Bloodclaat that', cos they heard it on Channel U and think its cool and thats what all black people sound like. Oh, and they think that all Jamaicans smoke weed.....

Its a little bit like say a French person coming to the UK, learning how to call someone 'a fucking wanker', eating fish & chips and going down the pub for some binge drinking and then thinking that was the extent of English culture!

Im totally up for people participating and learning about different cultures and all, but dont jus pick up on the stereotypical shit. I love West Indian culture, but there is much more to it than ganja, jerk chicken and cussing bad word. People need to find out about the history, read some literature (Small Island or whatever). Positive representations seen?

@ Obi - you definitely need to listen to Ken Boothe, and whilst your at it listen to some Beres Hammond and some Alton Ellis.
