What about Thor or Dr Octorex???

Compare the synths from this thread on great synths to Thor, and Thor pales in comparison. It also has an illogical layout imo, but then that's subjective.

Dr.Octorex does look cool enough. But considering you need to shell out an extra 100 for the outdated Recycle software if you want to create your own loops, it isn't that sexy. All other DAWs have built in slicing tools that surpase Recycle these days, and still allow for the export of midi & audio slices.

Reason 5 is meh compared to Logic, Ableton, FL Studio and Reaper imo. Shell out a couple quid for Camel Audio Alchemey and Reaper and you've just bought more funtionality than any version of Reason for less money..... 8)

*points to signature* I started out with fruity loops but I have moved on to sonic producer as I normally get better results. A good DAW is never going to make a good artist!
Live it. Learn it. Love it. DubTurbo.

Making Dubstep since (c)2008 <3. Recently switched from Live 8 to DubTurbo. (started with FL studio) :]

Reason is great, I love it. It has very nifty features for distortion and you can create
great wobbles and sounds in it's synthesisers, with that said: it isn't enough. What I do is that
I rewire reason into Logic, I have tons of VST's and samples which I can't use in reason (sure I can use samples, but don't want to spend ages,
plus Logic does this quicker and better).

Reason rewired into Logic = Sauce.

So are there sounds that you can only produce in certain vst's? I figured it's all just manipulating waves. I use reason, so my main VST is Thor. Are there certain filters/oscillators that aren't included in thor?

pardon my ignorance

Thor has a several synthesis types included although not necessarily in their most complex form.

Thor features (off the top of my head) subractive, wavetable, frequency modulation and phase distortion synthesis. It doesn't have granular, additive or physical modelling synthesis types available.

Just to clarify, Thor is not actually a VSTi, rather it is incorporated in a 'virtual studio' and happens to be an instrument too.

It is a fairly good when compared to average 'virtual analogue' synths, but a bit tame compared to some of the VST synths available like Alchemy, Absynth, Gladiator or Omnisphere.

What is unique to Reason is the Malstrom synth, which uses 'graintable' synthesis and is capable of some fantastic sounds. If you're using Reason, I'd say ditch Thor and focus on learning Malstrom backwards. If you want to access Thors filters, simply route the Malstrom through Thors audio inputs (which give you access to Filter 3). (Why they didn't include a dedicated filter unit in Reason 5 is anyones guess........ Bastards).

Maybe alchemy, fm8 and z3ta sound better than thor but thor has the greatest interface out of any synth I've ever used IMO. It's also far superior in EVERY way to massive or albino, they're over hyped and crappy.

Imo. Thors interface is confusing to most.

Sorry but pretty much everything > albino. I mean really, the thing sounds like cack and it takes ages to make anything with it XD The subtractor dicks all over albino.

@Depone - maybe it's cos I learnt on reason so their synths all feel really intuitive to me.

I'm surprised you find Thors interface intuitive tbh. I find it confusing because the filters, envelopes and LFOs are spread out everywhere instead of being grouped together tidily like the oscillators.

Thor does sound great, so it doesn't lose any points there.

I also find Subtractor far easier to use than Albino, although technically Albino wipes the floor with Subtractor when it comes to features and capabilities. Albino can also be used as an insert effect, and Saturator 3 on the filters is rather sexy imo. :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, Reaper has had more features added to it again. Check it out now by downloading it for free from http://www.reaper.fm/download.php :e:
