the only non-hypocritical way to eat is by growing all your own food (or trading food that you grow with other home-growers) and catching and killing your meat. Noone who sustains themselves in any way other than this can justifiably look down upon any other person for their own eating habits

Actually I've met a lot more people who are obnoxious twats about being meat eaters than I have about being vegetarians. I've met dozens of those faux-blokey twats who pull faces and make self-satisfied retard hur-hur-hur comments if you suggest eating something that doesn't have a big slab of dead animal in it, but I think every vegetarian I've ever known has just quietly got on with not eating meat and not pushed their opinions on anyone who didn't ask for them.

Catching and killing your own meat is the more humane method of doing it, but I don't think it would be at all sustainable for everyone to hunt their own food.
Also, home-growing is much less effective than bigger-scale farming and would probably take up more resources overall if everyone were to do it.

I wouldn't argue in an agressive manner with a Japanese buddhist monk armed with a naginata. Or argue that much against his point of view at all, possibly...

Tofu can be tasty, and not require an expert chef to make tasty. Most tofu you get in the UK is shit though. My only general dislike of purely vegetarian food stems from growing up with vegetarian restaurants overloading the food with oil to compensate for the lack of meat. I probably felt more unhealthy after a vegetarian meal than a 9-course carnivore's delight. Vegetarian restaurants are much better now though.

I don't actually know any in-your-face vegetarians and vegans. Most vegetarians/pescatarians I know became so pretty randomly, they just ended up having less and less meat in their diet.

The mahayana 'stream' of buddhism can advocate killing as a way of protecting from suffering, one example had a boddhisatva (buddha-to-be) killing someone to prevent them killing others and sending themselves to hell. I think the boddhisatva became a buddha and the person he killed was reborn in the Pure Land (a heaven-ish place) from this act. There are lots and lots of texts that say different things, the best thing with buddhism I think is that utilises 'skill-in-means' of using what is available to deal with different things as they are needed.
The shaolin are still at it too, if you hadn't noticed.

If you don't think any of those animals would eat the fuck out of you when the right time came, then you're being myopic. They're animals - they don't give a fuck about you.

isnt that the truth! i completely agree! (however, have a lot more respect for the sect that views Buddha as a teacher rather than a god)
