Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
Hi guys,
I'm having a very hard time trying to find out how to split frequencies efficiently in Kontakt. There's virtually nothing to be found on either google or youtube, seems freq. splitting in general is an underrated topic.
Anyway, I know how to do this technique with multiband compressors on mixer channels in FL, as I read in a topic on this forum. I've just got kontakt however and have no clue on how to apply this technique in this sampler, while I know it is possible. So far I've tried creating 3 different instruments with the same sample loaded in each of them and then putting a filter on the Group insert FX or just on the insert FX, but it doesn't seem to work out. As I add distortion and other things it creates higher or lower frequencies again.
Who can help me out?
Much appreciated,
Chinamode

Re: Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
In one instant of Kontakt (Well version 3 and upwards), duplicate the samples you want to freq split *in list view in the mapping editor, goto 'Groups editor', create an empty group, now back in the mapping editor highlight your duplicated samples, right mouse click over them and select 'move to existing group' (I think that is what it is called, I'm doing from memory) and select 'empty group', back in group editor de-select 'edit all groups', now you can add filters and effects to both groups of samples independently of one another, just select toggle between the 2 groups in group editor to split, i.e. add an lp filter to one and a hp filter to the other in the 'Group InsertFX' slots (not the insert effects). I think this is what you were asking.

or even easier just duplicate the instrument.
must admit i never got my head round groups properly in kontakt need to revisit and re-read the manual.

Re: Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
even easier than pedro's method... open the groups tab, make sure your group is selected (it will be if you only have the one), click on edit and click on 'duplicate group'. now make sure edit all groups is turned off (make sure you do this to avoid masses of confusion) and whichever name you click on - thats the group you will be editing.
from there you can add different fx, envelopes, modulation, etc to each group individually. masses of fun for twisty basses and what-not.
@paradigm x - surely that would be a bit of a caner on your computer? i personally never have more than one instance of kontakt running, thats why its got multi-outs.

Or even easier just split them in your DAW.
Blaze it -4.20dB

not two instances, duplicate instrument within kontakt.gravity wrote:@paradigm x - surely that would be a bit of a caner on your computer? i personally never have more than one instance of kontakt running, thats why its got multi-outs.
eg;

all the boxes on the right are different instruments. Can set to diff midi channels and outs.
I appreciate groups are poss easier but i prefer this as dead simple, can mute unmute diff instruments easily and easily send to different outs to try dif combinations without going deep into the editing. I hate the way you have to scroll all over the place in kontakt.
(and i never got my head round groups properly

but then you completely lose half of kontakts possibilities with regards to filters, fx, and modulation routings. i think you understimate the power of it.SunkLo wrote:Or even easier just split them in your DAW.
you can always split in your daw as well...
ah fair play, yeah that works too!paradigm x wrote:not two instances, duplicate instrument within kontakt.gravity wrote:@paradigm x - surely that would be a bit of a caner on your computer? i personally never have more than one instance of kontakt running, thats why its got multi-outs.

Re: Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
True but then you gain all of your DAW's possibilities with regards to filters, fx and modulation routings, and everything else it has. Plus it'd be a bit easier imo, I like to be able to balance everything from the mixer instead of having to open up the Kontakt window.gravity wrote:but then you completely lose half of kontakts possibilities with regards to filters, fx, and modulation routings. i think you understimate the power of it.SunkLo wrote:Or even easier just split them in your DAW.

I find the filters and effects in Kontakt better and more flexible than the ones in FL.SunkLo wrote:True but then you gain all of your DAW's possibilities with regards to filters, fx and modulation routings, and everything else it has. Cheers for all the good replies! I'm gonna try out the suggestions.
Re: Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
yeah but you still have them as well. things like modulation and fx are where knotakt shines really, have you ever tried to assign some kind of envelope to, for instance, a phaser so that it does the same modulation pattern whenever you play a note in you daw? much more of a pain in the ass than doing it in kontakt. takes about 3 seconds to do in kontakt.SunkLo wrote:True but then you gain all of your DAW's possibilities with regards to filters, fx and modulation routings, and everything else it has. Re: Frequency splitting in KONTAKT
Totally, you can set up some serious modulation in kontakt, assign certain parameters to a modwheel, then play out on a midi controller for some nice live movement while recording. Doing this in a daw would require shit loads of automation, post playing in your notes.gravity wrote:yeah but you still have them as well. things like modulation and fx are where knotakt shines really, have you ever tried to assign some kind of envelope to, for instance, a phaser so that it does the same modulation pattern whenever you play a note in you daw? much more of a pain in the ass than doing it in kontakt. takes about 3 seconds to do in kontakt.SunkLo wrote:True but then you gain all of your DAW's possibilities with regards to filters, fx and modulation routings, and everything else it has.
