Is it good or bad that dubstep is going mainstream?

Post by Stebrah » Tue Sep 07, 2010 1:12 am

Sup guys, So I decided to sign up for dubstep forum again as my last account ended up being abused my friends and branded a troll haha

Whats everyones take on mainstream/chart dubstep? (Rusko - Hold on for example)

I believe its good in a way, as it's getting the genre more widespread, but I think its ruining the exclusivity of it all!

Suppose all good music has mainstream elements though?

Discuss.

Try and quit bitchin'

I understand it probably makes you feel better having a moan at peoples threads for being "samey" but nobody forced you to read it, or even open the thread.. surely the subject was a big give away to the content?

For me the negative side of dubstep becoming more popular is that it will not be possible to see people like Skream in clubs anymore - only arenas - because promoters can't afford his fee.
Otherwise, the more the merrier!

inevitable. does it matter if it's good or bad? as long as you have the dubstep you like to listen to why does it matter? if anything it can only get better.

I think its a good thing, but like a guy in an earlier post said, it isnt really the proper Dubstep sound thats going mainstream its The cheesy pop Remixes and the massive synths that just keep on apearing.

I think a lot of producers are also quite peaved at this too because i think everyones jumping on the dubstep bandwaggon now, i even heard deadmau5 talking about him finishing 2/3 dubstep tracks. [He played snippets of some of them and was least impressed... Sorry Mau5 but stick to what you do best.]

Mixed emotions really, the whole dubstep going mainstream is always great because it means more people will be going to dubstep orientated clubnights and obviously bigger crowds usually means it goes more off the hook every time. But at the same time it also means we are going to be getting a lot more GASH comming through the system and frankly im sick and tired of hearing somone add you on facebook or something msg you with something like "oh WEWT get onto this track" and they send you a link to Rusko or Mt Eden... :u:

the faster ppl get exposed to mainstream dubstep, the faster they'll move on and find better dubstep.

i really really wish this were true

but i've had enough experience with people to find that that's not true. "mainstream dubstep" is relatively big around here, there's actually a fairly large number of people who listen to the likes of borgore, excision, datsik, rusko, etc. i'm positive that none of them care enough to find out more about the music.

However, fair play to the guy out there doing it!

How many producers can honestly say that when faced with the opportunity to go mainstream and earn a fuck load more money would turn that chance down?

Hells no! If somone offered me more money for doing something i was already good at! You would jump at the opportunity.
But like somone else said you got to remember that with the mainstream it isnt a case of who to listen to its a case of who they are forced to listen to.
