Basic Mixing Techniques
So to start off, I have a mixer speaker laptop headphones, just waiting to get an external soundcard so I can mix properly and have two channels of sound (obviously). I'm going back home from college in a week to bring that stuff up so I can start actually learning to mix and dj some parties. I'm sure there are numerous threads but, I was looking for some general info for the beginning DJ. Basically i'm just gonna be mixing dub, house, and electro for house parties. Things like basic transition would be appreciated.

Rule no.1 it's dubstep not dub (unless you are actually a dub-reggae fan and in that case I raise my hat to you sir)BondoDub wrote:So to start off, I have a mixer speaker laptop headphones, just waiting to get an external soundcard so I can mix properly and have two channels of sound (obviously). Rule no.2 get your beat matching down and then move onto how to make your transitions smoother, doesn't matter how good your eq'ing is, if the mix is a clanger then it won't sound good.
Rule no.3 match your gains between tracks, I see too many dj's have the next track either way too loud or way too quiet, either way it does not sound smooth.
Rule no.4 when starting off and playing in your room if the mix starts to trainwreck always try to save it. However if you are playing out and you start to trainwreck then get outta that mix asap!

Re: Basic Mixing Techniques
There is no formula for this shit man.
Its a creative process.
No basic transitions about it.

Re: Basic Mixing Techniques
if they don't there are plenty that do. on another forum i go on there was a thread called "live or lie" that went through exposing supposed acts playing live. there was one where they had a massive rack of cool synths with none of them plugged in and everything just being predone and played through a laptop.mks wrote:Do those guys actually fucking do that? Yeah theres vids on youtube that i cant find of chase and status 'mixing' for the first 20 mins of their set from a pre-mixed intro of 20 mins. Thats not that bad, at least they get the party rockin.symmetricalsounds wrote:if they don't there are plenty that do. on another forum i go on there was a thread called "live or lie" that went through exposing supposed acts playing live. there was one where they had a massive rack of cool synths with none of them plugged in and everything just being predone and played through a laptop.mks wrote:Do those guys actually fucking do that? Mitsubishi on the other hand, put a pre-mixed cd in a cdj and pretended to mix from vinyl like his life depended on it.

Re: Basic Mixing Techniques
I remember chatting to danny byrd about how recently he played a set with 4 other well known DJ's and he was the only guy actually mixing live. He said he clanged a few beans on purpose just to prove a point.
Re: Basic Mixing Techniques

Re: Basic Mixing Techniques
Djing to get the girls (even if its not the only goal) is like fucking for vaginity mate.BondoDub wrote:yea i wanna get pretty good before i do any kind of live thing cause if i fucked up that would be shitty. also bro, obviously im refering to dubstep its the dubstep forum derp derp. and im not doing it to just get the girls ive wanted to do it forever this is just a good enviroment. thanks for the help i guess

Re: Basic Mixing Techniques
Ez, I wasn't questioning whether you were referring to dubstep or not, but shortening dubstep to dub (When there is already a substantial genre with that name let alone multiple meanings) is like shortening "drum and bass" to "drum", given that there are a lot of dubstep artists on here who draw their influence from dub it would make sense to avoid mixing the two.BondoDub wrote:yea i wanna get pretty good before i do any kind of live thing cause if i fucked up that would be shitty. also bro, obviously im refering to dubstep its the dubstep forum derp derp. and im not doing it to just get the girls ive wanted to do it forever this is just a good enviroment. thanks for the help i guess
Hope you found my advice helpful, and good luck no matter what your motives are
