I've used up 120GB of my Macbook

First off, i know literally nothing about computers and size of programmes or anything, so help me out if you can.

Just now a few software updates came up and asked if i wanted to install so i said yeah, and then it said there wasn't enough room to install - I've only got MB's remaining.

The 'Size' of my applications page comes up as 4GB, all my downloads as 11GB, Logic files 7GB as i cleaned them up the other day. I-tunes 13GB. I've also got 7GB of samples.

That's everything i can think of in my area that may amount to something, yet it comes to 56GB. The 'Library' also comes to 53GB so you can see how it adds up to 120 but i've got no idea what makes the 56GB inside my username.

So, is there anything hidden inside the mac that takes up a lot of space i can delete ok? What's actually inside the Library, do i need everything there or can i delete anything?

Any help is cool!

Question regarding music i have in I-tunes. Most of the 11GB in my 'download' folder is music i've been sent, free downloads etc. I went through and deleted some older tracks i didn't need, yet they still played in I-tunes so i looked about and there's a folder (User>Music>I-Tunes>I-Tunes Music) and it had a copy of the track there too, which it's obviously now reading from.

So, can i delete all music from my downloads folder, as it's been duplicated and I-tunes is now using it's own folder to play it?

Just opened up a new track that wasn't in my I-tunes, and it appeared in that folder automatically again, so it looks like its ok to delete the original files?

i dont have much room left, more than you though lol, i had about 4GB before then i deleted all my music from music folder, downloads and itunes, nearly all anyway, cos i keep it all on the pc anyway and my ipod, i moved all my samples to disc too, and just drag the ones i want onto the mac so they can be stored in the logic folders. I had about 20 GB then, but now im down bout 9GB now, so im thinking of moving all of my apple loops to portable hard drive as i never use them and it takes up 20GB of space! these apple loops are just the loops though right? the exs24 samples etc arent stored in there are they?

and i dunno about any useless stuff in the library im afraid

I have an external firewire HD with all my samples, itunes library, all the data from various apps.

Saves a lot of space, and actually makes your system more efficient and faster. especially streaming audio in a daw. IE one HD runs the apps. and one has the audio. If it were on both it would struggle.

Yeah i got an external hard drive from my Uni recently so going to put that to use.

Does anyone know if i'm right about the I-tunes though? It runs through the folder it creates itself once it's opened, so it's ok to delete the original file/move it to a different hard drive?

Check the options. Sometimes its set to copy them to your library, sometimes not. Jeeeebus

i personally would delete all the logic apple loops unless you actually use them (which i do from time to time)

also, if you're really struggling for space, i'm sure there's at least 5gbs of printer drivers that you can just delete.
