i hate it when you play some electronic dance music to someone who obviously doesnt listen to it, and they say its techno, i was listening to some justice track at college before, and this one dude had a little listen and said some shit about techno! ITS NOT FUCKING TECHNO! if it is techno though i am fine with that.

Dubstep has broadened quite a bit since it was first created - and I think what you could have distinctly classified as dubstep back in 2005.etc, doesn't apply so much anymore. This isn't really a bad thing, but when I listen to "dubstep", it's the usual formula: 140 bpm, kick on the 1 and 4, snare on the 3 and 7. Lot of dubstep I listen to splits this up however, obviously - especially some of the deeper tracks.

I think we'll start to see some serious labelling of the subgenres over the next year or two, as I think people are getting confused as to what exactly is they're listening to. This isn't really a problem for the music itself, but it is a problem if you want to listen to dubstep and it's not what you're expecting (this happens a lot in Sydney). As an example, we love the US west coast dubstep flavour, but most of the aussies prefer the UK stuff. As a result, this will eventually create subgenres so that you know what you're getting yourself into when you go out.

And techno... lol. That used to be the huge over-arching genre for anything electronic. Anyone who listens to alternative music religously who has not ventured outside that umbrella seems to be afflicted by this curse. It would be similar to us electronic heads calling Limp Bizkit metal (when it clearly isn't).

For me Dubstep is defined by low frequency sub, sparse drum patterns and atmosphere, it's not just the way it sounds either, it's the way it makes me feel, the vibe of a track can trigger all sorts of things in my head, don't get me wrong, I know in the litteral (sp?) sense of the word dubstep is so much more, the transformer esq distorted robot sounds of Datsik etc etc seem to be at the forefront for so many people and I accept that's a direction dubstep has moved in, but for me, the dubstep sounds is that massive low frequency bass and tight snare - Vex'd - 3rd Choice still makes me do a little shiver everytime I hear it
