As a herald of the forthcoming “Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outerspace” album on Tectonic, Fortified Sessions have been called to bring together some of the most sonically adventurous proponents of bass music to Glasgow for a live dub event the likes of which haven’t been in seen in the city before.
Described as the labels most ambitious project to date by Tectonic boss Pinch “Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outerspace” sees legendary engineer Scientist, aka Hopeton Brown, set to work on exclusive material from fellow musical pioneers including Kode 9, Shackleton, King Midas Sound, Mala and Pinch himself to create a dub record which links the genre’s dread foundations to its fractured, futuristic present to create a new sound and point to one of the many possible directions of bass music. Scientist’s career began at King Tubby’s Kingston studio, where he was also given his name as Tubby acknowledged his ambitious experimentation and ability with electronics, before he moved onwards to Channel One and then Tuff Gong where he produced a run of seminal dub LP’s for Greensleeves including “Scientist Rids The World Of The Curse Of The Evil Vampires” and “Scientists Wins The World Cup”. With these albums Scientist widened the popularity of dub music manifold and developed his wild mixing style and unique application of the high pass filter that meant he has remained a leading sonic innovator and influence to this day.
In what amounts to nothing less than an embarrassment of riches, Scientist's raw material will be provided live by the mighty Upsetters- Lee Perry’s house band at the legendary Black Ark studios and the backbone of the Wailers in the form of the Barrett brothers Aston ‘Family Man’ and Carlton. Dub LP’s including “Blackboard Jungle” and “Super Ape” as well as the countless classic singles and dubs they played on are arguably Scratch’s finest work and we are humbled to have them play at our dance.
All this before we even get to welcoming back to Fortified Pinch, Loefah and the venerable MC Sgt Pokes, all of whom have wrecked up the dance with us in the past four years. Pinch, godfather of the Bristol scene has deftly welded the heavyweight low-end elements of dubstep to techno’s most futuristic elements to create some of our favourite music full stop. Loefah, member of the DMZ collective and label boss of Swamp81, home of the likes of Ramadanman’s “Work Them” and Addison Groove’s “Footcrab” both of which have been massive at the club in the past year and Sgt Pokes, mighty mic man for DMZ and best stand-up since Richard Pryor. You know his work!
The icing on the cake is that this event will channeled through through the full Mungo’s Hi - Fi / B.A.S.S. rig, tried, tested and true at the Outlook festival in Croatia this summer and proudly spreading the bass weight from Glasgow across Europe and outernationally.
Fortified finds it's self back at the Art School in very rude health indeed!
