btw people at manchester uni, what are the best halls? I've been offered richmond park but its baaaaare expensive (my student loan doesnt even cover it), and i heard it wasnt as live as other places.

Stay away from the Student Village in the centre of town. Most depressing place I've ever lived.

Owens Park seems to be enjoyed by all who live there, though not too luxurious either...

someone mentioned record stores.... i would say eastern bloc 100% of the time. whilst they may not carry your record if your looking for anything uber deep (or funky- in joke ppl already shopping there may get, sorry) they will def get it in for you if you ask so its never an issue missing shit if you know what you want. the guys who work there are ace and know their shit too which helps.

Yeah, i'd definately recommend Picadilly over Eastern Bloc, but EB have a better Drum and Bass selection.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Format are going to be coming with this term, Their line ups are much more for me now, especially since Rich has been backing a lot more of the crowd pleasing Cicus stuff (no disrespect obviously, guys gotta make money i know.)

But Manchester is a sick city, with a scene thats really easy to get involved in, and something for everyone!

Just in response to what you said (and no offense is taken btw )..... over the summer we've booked more more Circus-esque stuff as the crowd in Manchester that remains tends to be more into the heavy stuff. However, as the hoards of students return, we are able to push the deeper stuff (where my heart really lies....), and you'll see this when you see the bookings! Saying that though we have still booked Youngsta, Phaeleh, Indigo, Madd, Breakage and Marlow in the last few months since the students left.

However, and I would be interested to hear what people think of this, I still want to keep all the different strands of dubstep within the same rave. Hit&Run has always been about variety, and think our best nights have always been when each DJ has been markedly different to the last: e.g. Starkey, Daedelus, Datsik, Swarms and Nosaj thing last March, and James Blake, Borgore, Dom Hz and Cookie last December. I want to educate and illuminate if I can rather than just preach to the converted. I think the problem with "label" nights, whether it's Hessle or Circus, is that you have the same textures, and often the same tunes, for 4/5 hours. I think everything sounds better and fresher in juxtaposition to something totally different to it. And I count it as one of my most rewarding experiences as a promoter when loads of young ravers who were down to catch Borgore left the club that night saying how totally amazing James Blake was, who played a completely uncompromising set of his experimental brilliance.

I am just wondering whether people will still continue to tolerate such variety in the rave. It does seem like one half of dubstep has fallen out with the other. Which is a shame as one of things that so attracted me to it back in 2005 was the fact that within the same set, let alone the same night, there would be such variety.

So if this has been a ramble.... have a great time in Manchester. For me now its party scene is pretty much peerless in the UK, and Djs always comment on how good the atmosphere is up here when they visit.

Orite guys , i'm moving to Manc for university this year , but i started going to raves there last year when friends moved over for uni [ I did an extra year at college ]. I'm doing music production & engineering at futureworks university. I'm glad to find there are going to be loads more students who are into dubstep moving over there too .

APHID - I have friends who lived at daisy bank halls last year . They're orite man. I'm in Cosmopolitain accomodation place , expensive as fuck !

I just hope to hear deeper dubs later this year & next in Manchester. It's been about this ravey crunchy chainsaw dubstyle for too long . Although couldn't agree more with Rich above , variety definitely makes the night more interesting & enjoyable .

Go to oakhouse mate if you want your uni experience to be social at all... if not owens park. richmond is for reclusive spoilt heads. it will teach you how to cook if you're in oakhouse. valuable as hell!

As for dubstep nights, don't forget to check out the student run 'Heavy Rain' night which will be gracing the intimate roadhouse venue on monthly fridays/thursdays.

Well, I'm open to suggestions, but serious lack of options in Manchester at the moment...

Lots of reasons why we moved there but it was timely as Area 51 has now closed. Have you been here over the summer? Cos I feel they keep getting better, especially as we have now got the sound right. Youngsta, Marky and Breakage all have given the system the thumbs up. And I think we've had some of our best ever nights there recently. I hope you can be open minded about it at least a few times this coming few months as we have some amazing artists coming through.

Well, I'm at Leeds right now and thinking about moving to Manc. Considering the dubstep scene here and there, would anyone recommend moving there? I know 1-2 about Leeds dubstep nights but never been to any of em. I've been here for a month, tryin to get my feet down and already missed the Aug Subdub and probably gonna miss the Radikal Guru too though.

i don't know whether this helps but i was there when james blake played in december and when he played before mala in 2010, and have to say his sound was appreciated more [by me] after having just heard cookie monsta's set.

that's not to say i had a better night though; musically, the better night was the latter, but that's probably because i subscribe to the 'student type more into the deeper side'.
i definitely tolerate the variety on display though, partly as the 'other side' caters to my friends' tastes more, partly because of your thing about education and illumination -- it's put some mates onto some of the lesser-known and more innovative djs/producers around.

anyway gotta say big-up to hit n run for consistently booking quality artists
