Smalltown Canadian dubstep DJ trying something different...

Post by wobbafet » Tue Sep 14, 2010 2:32 am

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. Been lurking a bit here and there, decided to sign up and contribute :D

I'm also attempting to DJ and produce in a city in British Columbia near Kelowna, hometown of DJs Datsik and Excision. In many ways I feel like I'm constantly in this massive shadow of filth and wobble. Every party I play, people scream for filthy tunes. I mention dubstep to the layman and their minds already have a preconcieved notion of what I'm "all about".

However I never really got into Excision and Datsik, or much of the really aggy dubstep out there in the Rottun crew and elsewhere. I've seen them play at a club or two and Shambhala Music Festival, but they never thrilled me. To each there own... although I get frustrated when I wanna check out Beatport for new tunes and have to wade through an endless sea of (what seems like to me, at least) formulaic dubstep, I'm not a hater. I like what I like, and I really connect with DJs and producers like Synkro, Burial, N-Type, DMZ, Kryptic Minds, and TRG to name a few. I want to play music that reflects my personality and use it to connect with others on a musical level.

Actually, I really want to play music that I KNOW deserves some air time, and maybe change people's preconceptions of what the dub is all about. Or at least broaden some horizons. To the DJs and Producers out there, how would you advise someone like me? How much should I cater to an audience? How much should I (or can I) snub my nose at the requests of party promoters to play filth when I want to play something deep, or in my opinion, cutting edge and downright amazing?

Thanks for the warm welcomes and advice.

OH by the way, if you're interested in checking out my vibes, I have a few rough cuts and mixes on my soundcloud.

just keep doing what you are doing and if you are good at it people will notice.

don't flaunt your shit about until you are confident it is rad, because otherwise people will ignore you even when it is good.

that is my advice.

Hey it's really cool to see people into the deeper side of things around here. I'm from Penticton which isn't exactly a bastion of dubstep, either. There are people into it around here, but they're all into brostep, like you said.

Anyway, I'm really feeling the tunes on your soundcloud, we should exchange dubs sometime.

Do what you want to do. If people dont like it then unfortunatly you may just have to go elsewhere. The deep stuff is always going to be about tho, so when the brostep cloud has cleared your still going to be around!!
