Geeneus playing Funky House

Post by owengriffiths » Thu Mar 15, 2007 12:46 pm

Sorry if this topic's already been covered... but

http://www.myspace.com/sexnights shows that Geeneus will be playing at their latest East London event

I like 4 to the floor stuff and House and everything, but adding the prefix 'funky' to the latter word usually guarantees unimaginative cheese. The flyer suggests that this will be a horrorshow night of Sharon & Tracy shenanigans. Is G going to play a diet of quality old skool garage cuts or is it going to be 10 rewinds of Shapeshifters- I'm a different person?

Didn't know it was Geeneus & all. Never heard Target or Danny weed play before so dont know what their sets were like before they did this.

But why is it that all the Garage people play the most cheesiest & commercial tracks in the House scene. There are more underground & better quality house tracks out there.

Especially in light of the fact that they play really underground stuff when they're in Garage mode.

But if you're from an environment where Funky House is the norm then I suppose it's understandable that you wouldn't be that aware of the more credible stuff.

Blackwdown will hate me for it but I actually like Fish Go Deep's 'Cure & The Cause! Nice chorus if nothing else, heard it months before release on HLC's show, thought it was "you're in the car"

One of Geeneus's own house productions is good, (emotions, sounds a bit like a 90's tune) manages to avoid many of the cliches that the majority of funky house producers are too thick to realise they don't HAVE to include

at least you can dance to all of it...

thats why chef & LD's set at DMZ was everyones favourite. because it was a consistent dance set with no boring dark halfstep records. at the end of the day dubstep is dance music - or at least it all used to be. this is why i play a shit load of UKG in my sets.

People not dancing isn't confined just to Grime's glorified concerts or Dubstep's 'too lazy to jump at double time' events. People in the other dance scenes can be static as well. Substitute striking gun poses with MC's with starfucker &/or wiped out audiences staring at ugly 40K salary House/Techno/D&B/Trance DJ's.

Some half step tunes have that fast driving element that makes you forget how slow they really are. One thing I'd like to hear more of is 4/4 hi hats, sometimes better than an actual constant kick drum, they were a bit overlooked once garage became 2-step.

house (of all types) is amazing party music. the vibe it creates (on the most part) is amazing. its also sick to dj

dubstep cant be the be all and end all for going out, it gets far too boring. as a dj i feel the same way, so im not surprised to hear about grime producers moving that way. especially given how aggressive and masculine the tone of most grime is

still, not that into most funky. mostly feeling fidget and 'deep' house at the moment (even if that means a million things to a million ppl)
