ok.
first re-stating the obvious: the feel & control of it does not match that of a turntable, with which you can still be much more precise, especially when scratching a tune in (as opposed to fading it into the previous). i have used cdjs for playing out my own and friends' unreleased tunes and it's very nice it offers that possibility - i sure gotta give it that credit. but i found myself not even using that possibility very often because playing a 12" simply is 10 times nicer.
while all that may be personal, the wackness i referred to is the current situation where cats who never smelled the inside of a recordshop download & burn whole labelcatalogues and then pretend to be a dj - even thinking they are showing love and support to music. trust me i've seen it happen and those cats don't even realise what's wrong with that - or just don't wanna know.
so call me conservative - on this one only!
- but i'm convinced the lack of inspiration, effort and struggle that used to be a necessary part of becoming a dj goes to show in their sets.
so to end on a positive note: big ups to dubstep for still appreciating the vinyl. it's part of what makes me dig this scene.

^I agree there, that's why you've got to do something more interesting with the technology!

I used to be one of these kids that quite simply embraced technology and I will still quite happily play of cd, but since Pinch convinced to get a dubplate cut a little while back I was like, wwwoooooo this is cool and I have a lot more control and speed over the tune. And there is something unique to the sound of dubplates as well, admittedly getting a badman like Henry at DubStudio to do some minor pre cutting mastering definately helps. But the very feel of the plate quitre simply helps me focus when I'm playing out, I can see the grooves, I can drop the record anywhere I want.
SO now I try and get the big dubs I get cut and leave the rest on cd, means I'm a bit smoother and quicker when busting a set

I see what you mean but to me the tricks made possible with new mixing technologies mean nothing but a gimmick. Richie 'The Twat' Hawtin revolutionised mixing with his DE9 series. Credit to him for doing something new, honestly. But does it make the music better? Does using Ableton rock a party better? Hell no.
Give me Claude Young anytime. Man is juggling two records and scratching the third with his nose. Ok, that's kind of gimmicky too.
But there's sweat and skills involved you don't find in hard- or software.

true. if anyone, i accused the so-called musiclovers making it too easy on themselves and pushing many good labels on their way to bankruptcy in the process. these developments, of which i have unfortunately seen & experienced too many examples in the past couple of years, have been catalysed by new formats and mixing technologies, which - although i recognise the practical advantages they offer - therefore give me personally a bad taste in the mouth. but you're right: that's not strictly about the format, but more about the use of it.
if ppl use mp3s/cd-rs in a responsible way: all good. consider my slightly harsh first comment an expression of disbelief towards the question if "people still use twelves". LOL!

I use 12s, although I've used CDJs a few times and found them acceptable. I prefer the vinyl interface, but I can imagine getting equally used to CDJ...
I don't get this argument that digital Djs aren't really Djs. In my opinion, good mixing and selection are skills you have to learn regardless of the format you use (well, unless we're talking automatic beatmatching in software).

I definately prefer vinyl, but happy to and do use CDJs, actually looking forward to getting my first dubs cut, trying to decide which ones 1st....
I disagree that the format makes the dj, its what they can do with it that counts

I buy pretty much everything on vinyl, except the odd rock CD for the car.
I've been contemplating getting CD decks, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Although I don't have a good answer as to why, it's just less fun.
Serato/laptop/etc isn't even an option for me. I'd rather play tapes.

laptop and cds are the same thing but mp3 is compressed with a physco acustic curve.
tapes are where its at.

The only problem with Serato is carting it around.
If you wanna a play a tune out, gotta bring a lappy(i cant even afford this part), plug it in, fuck about coz u plugged em in wrong, fuck the levels :headache:
Its a great technology, would love to have it with my computer at home, probably invest a CDJ1000 first.....standard in clubs.

I play only vinyl, but picked up a Serato Scratch last year and have loved it. It does have some drawbacks, having to set it up being the main one, esp. if you are djing after someone else at a club. You have to plug in the in/out box, laptop and disconnect the tables, plug them into the box, then into the mixer....you get the idea, but all that hassle aside i still find it worth it. I just played a dubstep set off vinyl and serato last night and killed it. With Hotfulush, Bleep, etc. putting out high quality mp3s I can download them when I want, put them on my harddrive and play them out that night, no waiting for overseas shipping and paying the extra frieght charges. So to sum up, I still buy lots of vinyl, but am happy using Serato's vinyl/digital system.
