whatever you're bying, make shure it comes with some knobs. that's where the real fun begins. for the smallest of bugets, i would suggest you get a behringer umx49, or an m-audio oxygen if you can invest a bit more money.

I got hold of an M-Audio Ozone for 75 quid, that get things done and has assignable knobs, so all in all its a good keybourd

I just ended up picking up an Akai MPK49.....It was kinda pricey but for what it offers I really REALLY am loving it so far. Has a set of 8 endless pots, and 8 faders, 12mpc pads which are actually quite nice. Also you can switch between 3 different banks for everything too. So possibilities are just about endless.

I got a used M-Audio Axiom 25 which did the trick for a while.
But as I'm delving more deeply into theory and song structure I really need more keys. If I had got a 37 key controller to start I think I'd be fine, but 25 just isn't enough (takes like 5 times as long to get chord inversions figured out and I hate jamming out a melody and not having the next key up or down.)
I'm on the verge of nabbing a oxygen 49... don't need aftertouch or drum pads and could care less about the semi-weighted keys...but really wanting some sliders for improved dub-style effects twiddling.

just a heads up for the usa heads,
www.musicgoround.com sells used gear and have gotten a few pieces from them, and seen some steals that are better than ebay on "vintage" pieces. good place to look when on a budget, just make sure you get someone knowledgeable on the phone when you call the store if you order
