halfstep IS dubstep imo.

it is one of if not the main strain. its what best defines the genre and was the sound that culminated from dubstep properly finding its own in about 04-06.

that said most times im up for hearing everything else aswell, even if halfstep is my favourite i dont think id enjoy it as much if the entire night was on the same tip. thats whats great about dubstep, its a proper mix and mash of styles.

if half step is 'dead' doesn't mean funky is the only other option

dubstep isn't all half step yano - loads of producers have been experimenting with different sounds, rhythms etc as well, these past few years, but it's all still dubstep at the end of the day, depends how you want to define dubstep. it's not about whether it's half step or not

and there's still a lot of producers on the halfstep thing, listen to youngsta's sets nowadays, nearly every tune is. so no

i dont think its so much about moving on with the new and forgetting the past....a good example is how many amen jungley tunes get been made within the dubstep community in recent times....

i think its more about expanding and refreshing. having more styles to mix and mash together just makes for a more interesting flavour....kind of like a alcoholic cocktail lol.

How would you define dubstep then? IMO it's hard to define dubstep without refering to an aspect that has featured in most of the tunes since the genre sprang up.

people are going to have different opinions. the main thing about dubstep is the sub bass and emphasis on bass in general. yeah you can define it by saying it has a half step beat but then that rules out everything else including earlier dubstep e.g 2004 - when dubstep started to get differentiated from grime, lots of it was tribal sounding and with garage influenced beats, as well as the early half step stuff. so there weren't really a defined structure to it

I think to define a genre you need to list the aspects most commonly featured in the music, and like you rightly said sub bass has been commonly used in Dubstep, but so has the half step rythm.
