If you search on youtube you'll find a good few videos, it's something you just naturally learn over time, so I wouldn't worry if you're having difficulty with it. The more you produce the more your ear will develop.

Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
I EQ most things, mainly to cut out what doesn't need to be there (which is a surprisingly large amount) and boost what needs to stand out e.g. boost the top end of the hats, cut out any obtrusive bass from the kick, cut out that little bit of resonance on the snare. All of it is stuff that could be left in without making your tune sound like shit, you could even say that most EQing is unecessary, but cutting it out just makes everything work together better.thierry_le_dj wrote:ok been watching a few tutorials on you tube also i've notice most is on eqing kick's and bass,

How does I wobbled bass?
Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
For star learn how cut the low and the high extremes , then you got to balance the medium zone , and that's the hardest part "audio mixing ,procedures and tools" is one of the best books to learn mixing

Jesus i remember reading that, what... seven years ago?daft tnuc wrote:2 great resources :

it's not exactly spot-on but it does a great job at opening up the discussion about frequency ranges... and gain structure.

And just... play with it. Spend some hands-on time just messing with EQ on different sounds. Load up a single sound file, open up a multiband EQ and try it out, then a parametric EQ, and start moving shit around just to get a feel for it.
One thing that I've been finding is that less is more; it's sometimes tempting to go balls-out and add +12dB on the "sweet spot" freq or try and carve out problem bands entirely, but often a little bump of 2 dB here, ½ dB there - in the broader context of the whole mix - is more useful than going overboard.
EQing is like cooking. It's kind of hard to grasp what the right and wrong amount of salt is until you actually start using it little by little until you think it's right (i.e. it works in the entire recipe, not just on that ingredient.)
One last thing: keep copies of your original pre-EQ tracks as a fallback, because sometimes it's better just to start from scratch than continue down a dead end street.

Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
Mate it depends entirely on what you want, I tend to eq a lot of elements in the mix but if it doesn't need it then it doesn't need itthierry_le_dj wrote:ok been watching a few tutorials on you tube also i've notice most is on eqing kick's and bass,

What area's do you feel would benefit from eq in your mix?
-Separating instruments?
-More definition?
-More Body/weight?
-Placing elements closer in the mix/further away?
-Changing tonality of instrument altogether?
Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
I've learnt with EQing that it is better to subtract then to add
Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
If what you wanted from a sound was a 1.5 db boost at 2k would you really set up 2 shelf eq's and subtract 1.5 db then boost the whole lot by 1.5 db to try to achieve the same result?krispy wrote:I've learnt with EQing that it is better to subtract then to add
edit: The advantage I see to cutting instead of boosting is that it's very easy for things to sound better when you are upping the gain by 6 db or so, (Louder = sounds better) so if you aren't matching the gains as you go along then you can end up playing the boost game all day not really getting anywhere except a louder sound.
I disagree with the boosting sounds worse than cutting in EQ. You're still applying phase shift whether you boost or cut.

AND DON'T FORGET the ying-yang effect of eq , that is; if you wanna make a sound more brilliant yo can boost the highs or cut the lows , make the experiment , it sound the same , you only have to rise the volumen in the sound you cut something

Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
Here's an "in-house" guide. I always reference this thread whenever I start worrying about equalizing: http://www.dubstepforum.com/guide-frequ ... t1626.html
Re: anyone would know any good tutorials how to EQ's?
This helped me quite a bit. The tutorial uses Fabfilter's Pro Q, but the principles obviously apply to any EQ plugin.
