Schitzophrenic (sp?) Writing.
I can't tell if this is a problem or not to be honest. I find one week I'm writing slow piano themes with big lush pads and a sub and the next I'm writing raging intertwining guitar solos as if somebody just asked me to do the sound track to Lethal Weapon and then there's all my weird Asian influenced stuff. I seem to have like 3 very different sides to my writing. I can't help it, I figure I should probably settle on one style and stick with it because it might look a bit less messy and amateur, but at the same time I like writing in all three styles, and I don't like the idea of doing things under an alias because that means working from the ground up again really :S
I guess a part of the problem is kinda that I feel free to do whatever the hell I like stylistically in dubstep, its very freeing but at the same time it's kinda cursed me to write like I'm three different people.
Does anybody else do this? Have you found it to be a problem?

I have my breakcore/black metal/folk/noise/classical/speedcore side. Then the melodic as hell, subby ragga-infused breakcore... And my glitched out dubstep. Then there's the times I just make glitch out of indie rock samples.
And I've been messing with my guitar again lately.
Don't know. I don't mind any of this. I like different music, thus I make different music. I mean, if other musicians can have multiple styles, why can't you? Haven't finished tunes in months, though, sadly.

been making a fair few different styles and the e.p i'm going to drop is no style at all really, i'm not sure what i would call it.
the "done" thing is to use aliases but i feel exactly like you that it's just too much trouble and work. i reckon fuck it and just make whatever.

Re: Schitzophrenic (sp?) Writing.
The more sides the better I think. It's refreshing to me when a producer steps out of their comfort zone to make something where they're not sure how others will react. For example, the other day I dropped a funk song and like five people stopped following me within the hour. I don't think the song sucks, but it is a stretch from the style that I usually produce. So fuck em, I plan on doing more things like that anyways at the cost of alienating everyone if I have to. Your just showing the need to express some stuff, I would say the ultimate freedom is not to worry.
BTW- All your stuff is dope.

just do whatever you feel like making man. Being able to skate around different styles is a sign of ability, and surely you want to express more than just the same exact feeling over and over again? I try out a whole bunch of styles, and like going all over the place- eventually stuff rejoins, and something I wrote recently fits in with something I wrote months ago, and then I can start thinking of pairing those together in releases for consistency. Or I make tracks which feel- to me- like I've bridge a gap between two other completely opposite tracks I've made. That's fun too.
Other than that, it doesn't matter what you do, put enough of yourself into it and it'll sound like you whether it's sad, happy, bangrha, thematic, doom, punk, etc etc. Enjoy making music for the sake of it

schizophrenic isn't the word you're looking for... although i think that would make for some interesting music...
you mean like "multiple personality disorder"?
yeah.. i think it's very healthy as a musician to have many different styles that you are strong in.. every time in my life that i've thought i'd finally found a musical style i'd never again stray from... the old ones eventually keep coming back.. by this point i've just learned to accept and enjoy it.. i'm happy i still like all the cheesy pop rock i used to listen to.. it's actually good influence on my electronic shit

I just figure that might be really counter productive. Means all new networking accounts building from the ground up again because at my level I don't think anybody would know it was me. Or does that even matter?

Re: Schitzophrenic (sp?) Writing.
as long as your tunes still feel like you there's no problem in switching up styles. and from what you said i assume you're writing different musical backdrops which you'd still work into the 138/140ish dubstep frame, so where's the problem? if all your tunes were the same it'd be boring, and look at zomby who even has a whole album of 90's hardcore breakbeat (or whatever you wanna call it) without an alias.
oh, and i'm all for guitar solos in dubstep. headstrung anyone?

+1 and I'm not ashamed to admit it!narcissus wrote:blink 182 helps me thru the darkest of times
@Kaiori - I really don't think there's any problem with you making tunes in those styles at all. In my opinion it only calls for an alias if the types of music you are making are so different that there are potential listeners to some of it that will get put off by hearing your other stuff. All of your styles have enough in common to cover the same 'fan base' as it were. Like when I first started producing I made real 'filthy' dubstep and wobbly jungle-esque DnB. Now I make liquid, chilled and often oriental style dubstep and future garage, if I decided that I wanted to go back and start making aggy stuff again as well then I think I would have to make myself a new alias to keep the two contradictory styles seperate.

I feel you totally KB. I'm torn between a myriad of styles and genres but it means I rarely get bored. I just love producing and experimenting, today I made an electro track and I haven't bothered with electro for months. Do whatever you want to do. But EQUALLY I think a signature style is important to stand out from the crowd and resonate with "fans" and building a network. It's a clash of personal and professional loyalties.

dont take this the wrong way but i think you would make even more amazing tunes if you just forgot about dubstep altogether
