Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
...and as a follow up to my original reply..
being in the US, and coming into this sound from a gigantic appreciation for dub music, i'd be in the market.. beyond just the remix concept, this affords the opportunity to bring the "version" mentality and real dub studio techniques into a genre that has borrowed the name..

Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
Sbtrkt does a pretty good job of creatively remixing tunes on the fly. he seems to have allready employed this idea of mixing different parts of tunes rather than the traditional method of one tune to the next, at one point he had the vocal from footcrab over a completely different tune then dropped it into another tune when we were all expecting footcrab to drop, i don't know if he had the vocal for footcrab on its own or just eq'd it but it gave that effect, its an interesting idea. . .
Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
just spotted this!Naturally there are pitfalls, particularly in how the artist/label would feel about copyright, for example opening yourself up to thousands of unauthorized/unwanted mixes, theft of samples etc, but perhaps this could be overlooked due to potential benefits of new markets and encouraging creativity amongst a customer base? 99% of tunes are pirated within 24hrs of them being released nowadays anyway, would the tune being sold in parts matter that much more?
I was thinking about this as part of starting the bass music label and offering stems. in the end I figured that yeah, people pirate shit anyway so you're relying on goodwill. But also, having done some remix competitions before, where you give people your samples and actively hope they'll do something with them, 99% of the mixes you get back are unuseably poor. So I ended up figuring that if someone is gonna make a good tune, they'll do it one way or another - and you'd be amazed at how someone can take a drum beat that was processed, mastered and cut to vinyl and make it sound like shite!
also I'm not sure about the 'unwanted mixes' aspect. So long as people are crediting the original artist and not trying to sell their remixes, I don't think it's too much of an issue; thinking back to last year when Major Lazer did that remix comp for 'Pon de Floor', everyone and his dog had a remix on their soundcloud - probably spread the name far further than it would have gone if they'd just had the original track available....

Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
this is probably one of the best points I have read in a while, it totally made me start thinking about just letting things sound as they are instead of pushing the timesimonoff wrote: i think a lot of producers have material which will never turn into a 5 minute tune .. but still can be used as dj tools...

this could also be a useful Dj tool on vinyl for scratching, sampling, etc
Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
tried that once actually, back in about 2004. wasn't very popular!

Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
That's really cool, Bassmusic. Will be snagging that release come pay day.
Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
i'd like it for some tunes but only to make my own VIP's which i'd then only use in my mixes. kinda bringin the dj and producer thing more together, but as for those newer 'creative' mixing techniques... i'm skeptical. i like tunes the way they are, and i think if they work together well a mixer and 2 decks (in my case digital as i'm still using a midi controller) should be all a dj needs.
also i dont want dance music business turning into some hypermodular thing where there's producers who only put out basslines, others only doing only drumwork etc. mashing up things can be nice, but not for a whole set. there's so many rhythmic details that just fit together in some tunes, it's mental. why would i want to rip one of those parts out of it and slap it ontop of an entirely different beat?
so yeah, for some tunes it'd be cool but please don't make it the standard.

Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
This is my view, I know with techno the idea of layering up djs tools is more common due to the nature of the music but in bass music I think there is a lot more emphasis on the way tunes work as individual pieces rather than their parts, it links in with the whole re-load culture aswell. Not to say there isn't a place for it though.hasezwei wrote: also i dont want dance music business turning into some hypermodular thing where there's producers who only put out basslines, others only doing only drumwork etc. mashing up things can be nice, but not for a whole set. there's so many rhythmic details that just fit together in some tunes, it's mental. why would i want to rip one of those parts out of it and slap it ontop of an entirely different beat?

Re: Question for Ableton/Digi-DJs
Is this basically what an artist would do live with their own loops?
If so I believe Dan Le Sac does this and has been for a while, its a brilliant concept making this available for commercial and bedroom djs, If it sold well this could revolutionise djing and turn it away from jockerying discs and onto the live remixing era
