It does seem to give the track alot more room, I do like it. Although the bass sound in that second tune makes me sad. :(

I've always made a lot of tunes with that formula. Also Kick on 1, snare on 2 I really like. Eventually though it has just led to me making garage with things like kick on 1 snare on 1.5 kick on 2.5 snare on 4 but then reversed later so the first snare is on 2 and the second is on 4.5 phew, bit of a mouthful there but yeah, it's fun to mess around with different drum placements. Some songs cry out for kick on 1 snare on 3 though. Depends on the track innit.

EDIT: Also this is more old school than new, twas how a lot of the first dubstep was made back when it was first taking shape.

Kick 1 Snare 3, has been dead forever.

them tracks were not just, kick 1 snare 4.

they were, kick 1 and 2.5 snare 4.

with out the other kick they sound shit, if you miss it out every now and again it sounds huge, because of all the extra space between the kick, and snare.

pretty much any standard pattern with one kick and one snare is going to be boring. you need two or three kicks and then a snare somewhere depending on the song

seeing this thread made me open up ableton and put a kick on the 1 and snare on the 4, with bits inbetween.
