"Improving the production/whole forum" brainstorm

Post by jaydot » Tue Sep 28, 2010 11:12 am

Let's throw some ideas on how to improve the forum even more.

What about an embedded radio widget that plays DSF dubs on autoplay? Could it be possible and is it a good idea?

Also, the dubs section could use a little improvement. Sub-sections possibly, so you can jump to what you need?

Anyone got any ideas dudes. :w:

This stuff comes up all to frequently.

Its the way it is because it is. From what Ive gathered, Dubway doesnt like muddling about with installations, mass topic moves, ect. ect.

It doesnt just happen cause you think of it... theres technicalities in this stuff, and with the shite layout of the PHPBB system, I can hardly say I blame him for having things this way at all.

To incorporate a radio widget youd need to essentially setup a mainpage/side nav bar outside of phpbb, and then incorporate phpbb back into that. Seems alot of work when you could just send dubs over legend for his sessions, mine when I run them, message me and setup a session, network with people and get on real radio n mixes, or heck, justvisit soundcloud. Also consider someone would ahve to be hosting the mp3s for the radio widget.

sub forums for what? subgenres that dont exist? I dont think anyone wants to be the one who creates the grunstep/robostep/wobblestep/deepstep subforums. Theyll be shunned from the edm scene forever. and like I said, mass topic moves.

I was thinking more "ambient" "dark" "dirty" categories as opposed to just whacking -step on everything.

And yeah ur right there is the Sessions, I don't know too much about them admittedly. But nothing comes close to the exposure a widget on DSF's main page could potentially give you ;D But again I'm not a software whizz, so don't know the ins and outs of the technical side. Couldn't you just write a Java-enabled player with some sort of macros assigned to play random tunes from a list? Or something. :?

Writing the player is the very easy part.

Its the fact that you cant directly incorporate that kinda jazz into phpbb.

phpbb is made to be incorporated into websites, not have stuff incorporated into it!

and like I said... you wanna host all those mp3s? the boards sql db must be huge to begin with...

idk man just odesnt seem very practical for something I personally am gonna adblock anyway.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it yo.

I like the simplicity of DSF, granted we could do with a few more themes but subsilver2 does me fine :)

Less threads from Jaydot spamming up the forum??

(I joke, I joke sorry man XD)

Seriously though, the dubs section is a graveyard and we want it that way :p It's all about the feedback threads in this forum. As for the widget, I can't say it interests me to be honest. If someone set up a seperate website for 'dsf radio' filled with the best tunes from the forum such as comp winners etc then that would be kinda cool but I doubt anyone would go to the trouble..

Someone who runs a blog could kindly offer to embed a widget if that were possible. Before the DSF blog idea died, me and Basic were discussing an idea (I'll leave him to tell you about it) which was kinda sweet providing someone had a blog with the knowhow/bandwidth etc etc

but purpose would that have? the only people who'd check it are production heads anyways and the odd DJ... Why don't you just get exposure through the proper channels, people have been doing it for yonks and it works!

Every time something like this pops up, in any media-based industry it fails...

On the note about dsf radio we have the dsf sessions going for a long time... legend4ry does a weekly, phrex has lost schedule but pops in, guests, and I was just discussing with a few friends getting a more steady schedule out of myself. you volunteering too dj lol? its there. support it.

but like legend4ry said, its not broke, dont fix it.

jaydot... seriosuly man.

I still think a beginners subforum would be a good idea but tbh I don't think this place needs much else in terms of technicality

I knew about legend4rys weekly mixes and have heard of the dsf sessions but never encountered them...is this the price I pay for never venturing into the 'mixes' subforum??

dsf, and especially the production forum, doesn't get anywhere near enough traffic to warrant a subforum in production.

I imagine it would look something like this x10000:

"Im new praducing listen HELP!"
"I produc for a day how do I sound like Datsik, do i need computer"
"I can't wobble, I can't read, I can't google"
"Im to busy to give feedback, but not to busy post my track!"
"Buy my 320, comment my soundcloud a million timez pleze"

Every thread would have no views and no replies, which would be good except they'd all flow into here, not read the rules, and post a new thread anyways.

but wouldn't that at least clear up this forum?

I don't think it would, because none of them would respond to one another. They'd hang out for like 30 mins to see if they got a reply, then they'd head over here and do the same thing. This would just create twice the problem.
