dunno about extracting the audio directly, but something like audio hijack or soundflower can record the output of any application including a DVD player.

those look like they would do the trick.... BUT i'm currently on a PC.... should've mentioned that in the first place.....
i could always route out my soundcard, through my mixer, and back into ableton live... but it gets a little noisey

You should just be able to set a recorder like Audacity to record "what you hear" and just play the DVD while recording, but if you're having sound issues like me, you can try downloading a DVD audio ripper like Kingdia. On the demo version you can only rip half of what you select, so you need to select twice as much - ie, if you need the sounds from chapter 2, rip chpters 2 and 3. Pain in the ass, but I couldn't find anything better for PC.

i've tried the gordian knot freeware rip pack and this is excellent. don't ask me exactly how this audio rip thing is working because i've done that a long time ago and can't quite remember, but there are also lots of tutorials on this site.

hope this was any help.
