Actually I've met a lot more people who are obnoxious twats about being meat eaters than I have about being vegetarians. I've met dozens of those faux-blokey twats who pull faces and make self-satisfied retard hur-hur-hur comments if you suggest eating something that doesn't have a big slab of dead animal in it, but I think every vegetarian I've ever known has just quietly got on with not eating meat and not pushed their opinions on anyone who didn't ask for them.

Watch out! Enraged vegan alert!

On the plus side, at least they know you're not going to butcher them.

For the huge expansion of our healthy lifestyle, we are aware to the foods that we've eat. To that vegan foods may be a good for us. These kinds of foods are rich in vitamins and help our condition into normal.

Apparently humans would be better off eating like cavemen since that's how we evolved to eat for millions unlike farming cereal grains for the last 10,000 or so years

I was half way writing a reply to one of the earlier posts, but gave up because I read more of the same old idiotic things that meat eaters always go on about to childishly irritate vegetarians in threads like these... And I generally found other replies which basically said what I would have said anyway. And the ignorant ones were generally ignored. No, your trolling didn't work on me this time.

i been veggie for the past 3.5 years and have recently decided to start including small amounts of meat in my diet. the cravings never subsided and it's kinda insane to deprive yourself of something you want that bad.

Deforestation, soil erosion, greenhouse gas emmissions and water pollution are massive problems that the ever growing meat industry will continue to propagate if nothing is changed, but the old veggie fallacy of "if everyone became a veggie we'd save the world and the climate" is probably not true.

"We feed animals grain that we could eat ourselves." Almost true, but not quite.
Cattle sheep and goats convert inedible grass from land not suitable for farming into edible meat - thus ensuring that people that live in areas with crappy soil where crops can't grow won't starve. On top of that it's actually less harmful to the environment to have a cow grazing in a field than to plough it up and plant crops (on semi-arid or hilly land).

An alternative foodstuff to grain for factory/industrial animals is the foodwaste we produce, especially for pigs and chickens who can't really eat grass anyway. Yes, you'd have a scrawnier animal, but it's win-win in terms of the environmental cost, and the net gain in calories.

Because we've got to be realistic - with an ever growing population constantly demanding more food, meat really is one of the most efficient ways of providing sustenance for us.

Yes, they use lots of water, but so do crops. The methane thing, well, I'm sure we can find a use for it, ha.

If we looked long and hard at our farming practices and our daily meat consumption, especially in the west (yeah I'm looking at you Mr. meat with every meal, fat fuck) then yeah, we'd be on the right track, but right now, it's a pretty sorry state of affairs.

I'm a veggie by the way.

No facts or figures backing any of this up. Yes they convert grass into energy which we can then use as fuel, but you don't mention % of land that grass can grow on where no other edible plant can (if that's even possible)

An alternative foodstuff to grain for factory/industrial animals is the foodwaste we produce, especially for pigs and chickens who can't really eat grass anyway. Yes, you'd have a scrawnier animal, but it's win-win in terms of the environmental cost, and the net gain in calories.

I couldn't find much information on whether pigs could live off human excrement, Wikipedia said that they "will eat the feces of herbivores that leave a significant amount of semi-digested matter.", and goes on to say how "domesticated pigs should not be allowed to eat any sort of feces, as this contributes to the risk of parasite infection." Couldn't find much else other than than on very un-reliable Yahoo Answers type websites, one of which said that they will only eat faeces if there is no alternative, and the reason they roll around in it is to cool them down because they lack sweat glands.

As for Chickens I really couldn't find much information supporting your claim.

Because we've got to be realistic - with an ever growing population constantly demanding more food, meat really is one of the most efficient ways of providing sustenance for us.

Simple science states that vast amounts (exponential?) of energy is lost as we go up the food chain, not eating animals cuts out a step in the food chain, therefore eating vegetables is far more efficient.

Yes, they use lots of water, but so do crops. The methane thing, well, I'm sure we can find a use for it, ha.

Firstly, bear in mind that the plants the animals eat needed water to grow and also the animal themselves would need to drink water to grow to culling age. I don't know the facts, but I struggle to see how this could be equal to the amount used up by vegetables.

As for methane, it's an even more potent greenhouse gas that CO2, how we could devise a cost efficient way of catching if all I don't know, when it could be extracted in other wise so much more cheaply. That's even if we can find a mass use for it, which I highly doubt based on its chemical properties.

We are top of the food chain, so eating meat isn't a moral problem for me.

The climate change aspect is far more compelling... and is the reason my housemate has gone veggie, but I'd personally prefer to see reformed farming, especially in this country, concentrating on raising high quality livestock in good conditions.

I think the people would easily accept a little less meat in their diet if prices were to rise due to sorting out farming practises... but shutting ourselves off from meat seems a little extreme. Domesticating and farming animals was one of the major steps in us moving from just being another hominid species scattered about to being the world's dominant animal with a societal structure and genetic immunity to lots of disease (plus the associated technology - vaccination, machinery, date systems/clocks etc etc etc)

Farming good... but could be better.

This sounds like an 'appeal to nature' type argument, where you use what is 'natural' as a justification for a moral point of view.
