Charlie May sound design process interview

Post by breakitdown » Thu Sep 09, 2010 7:43 am

Hey guys,

As well as tutorials for Massive, i'm going to do short interviews with established producers within the electronic music world about their thoughts and processes on the topic of sound design every month. Although not always relevant to your specific genre, always something that can be learned from other producers i think!

First up we welcome Charlie May.

As the architect behind many of the stylistic blueprint shifts in dance since the early heady days of acid house, Charlie May knows a thing or two about what makes a dance floor tick. One half of revered progressive house pioneers Spooky; the engineer and producer of many of Sasha’s biggest singles and albums; highly respected solo producer in his own right, May has remained at the vivacious beating heart of house since the early ’90s.

If you prefer i stick to dubstep etc on this forum, let me know and i'll only post interviews relevant to this genre - thought some of you guys might find it interesting non the less!

Also, i mention in the interview an older interview with these guys talking about Burial being an influence on the second Involver album - in fact in this interview you can hear the unrealed 'dubstep' influenced versions of the Involver2 tracks... very much darker than the released version. Let me know if you want to hear this and i'll dig it out!

No tutorial this week, but thought these might be of use!

Post by breakitdown » Sun Oct 03, 2010 1:37 pm

Hey it's been a while since i updated the blog massivesynth.com - i've been on holiday the past couple weeks... but will be back to business from now on with more tutorials for Massive.

To kick off i welcome DFRNT to answer a few questions on his processes and thoughts.

Noise OSC and performer for hats with NI Massive

Post by breakitdown » Thu Oct 21, 2010 6:13 am

New tutorial up on the blog, this week covering hi hat creation with the noise OSC and the performance modulator.
Whilst the hat's sound is quite basic, with a bit of work you could get some very nice sounds and patterns out it.

http://www.massivesynth.com/tutorials/c ... s-massive/

Working on a load of new ones, sorry - been a bit slow theses past couple of weeks with a new job and been on holiday - writing a pile of new ones this week :)

Also added a new tutorial for members on using the band reject filter for sweeps.

The subscribers tutorials now include:
  • Boards of Canada "Phasing chords" technique with stepper modulator
    Routing within Massive
    Insert effects in Massive
    The Bypass function in Massive
The Band Reject filter for sweeps
More coming soon

Drop in your email on the blog to get these (btw they are a chain of autoresponders, so you will get them as email in order every few days).
More coming soon,

Macro controls with NI Massive

Post by breakitdown » Sun Oct 24, 2010 9:30 am

Hey

Next tutorial on my blog www.massivesynth.com is from Christian Meyer.

His video tutorial cover setting up a bass sound with Macro controls to control key elements.
Although the macros control set up is quite simple in Massive, setting up the controls across multiple elements can really make a difference to patch control - especially in a live environment or for tweaking out live whilst jamming in the studio.

You can find the tutorial here:

http://www.massivesynth.com/tutorials/m ... s-massive/

Hope you find it useful :)
